“2,006 acres of southern Appalachia”

Roan Mountain State Park encompasses 2,006 acres of southern Appalachian forest at the base of 6,285 foot Roan Mountain. Park elevation ranges from 3,000 feet in the valley to around 3,700 feet on surrounding ridges. Rich hardwood forests allow for a great diversity of life and a wide range of outdoor activities. Park guests have opportunities to hike along creeks and ridges, fish for trout, play tennis, swim, tour a century old farmhouse, join rangers and naturalists for educational programs, and enjoy mountain music concerts. Wildflowers and wildlife inhabit the hollows and ridges of the Roan foothills in abundance. From Dutchman's-breeches to deer, trillium to turkeys and bee balm to black bears there is always something to discover. Guests who wish to stay overnight have a choice of RV and tent camping or fully equipped AAA cabins. The Appalachian Trail and famous Rhododendron Gardens of Roan Mountain can be accessed at Carver's Gap, an 8 mile drive from the park. A naturalist is on hand year round to provide programs for visitors to the park and special groups. Thirty AAA cabins are situated in the woods of Roan Mountain State Park. Each cabin has a front porch with rocking chairs, fully outfitted kitchen, full bath with tub/shower, wood burning stove and gas/electric heat. Firewood, bedding and towels are provided by the park.  All of the park's 107 family campsites have a grill and picnic table and are located near a bathhouse with hot showers. A dump station is located at the campground check-in. The campground has 87 RV sites with water and electric hookups and 20 tent sites that are served by two community water spigots. The tent camping area does not have electric or water hookups...

We had a great time cabin camping at the State Park. It was beautiful and memorable experience. Our cabin was nice and clean. The beds were absolutely comfortable. The campgrounds were excellent with tables and tent pads. The local residents were very friendly and they entertained tourist's questions.

We were here early season and stayed in a site along the river/creek. Our site was perfectly level and even had water and electric hook ups...even for a tent site! The RV sites looked to be similar. They had flushing toilets and if I remember correctly, even had showers.

There was some great hiking along the river right from the campground and a few historical landmarks/houses that you could meander around. From atop Roan Mountain, there are some really great views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

We stopped in for a night on our way to Asheville. The park was very clean and well kept. We stayed at a tent site (32) and planned to just sleep in the van. The site was very nice; however, the parking is on the side of the street, instead of within the site itself. It looked like most sites within that loop were that way. It wasn't bad, but not as we had expected. WiFi available, but had to walk to the check in station to get a signal.
Campground was quiet, beautiful, and well monitored. Definitely go up to Carver's Gap and hike to the Balds!

We are traveling up the east coast from Florida and this has by far been the nicest spot so far. We have a 20 ft. campervan; the sites all have a different layout so check online before you choose yours. We came after hours and just pulled into one, and we stayed put for 3 nights. There are beautiful hiking trails right on site, the bathrooms are very clean, and the sounds of nature are wonderful! There are definitely sites for ANY kind of camper, including cabins. Absolutely drive up to the summit of Roan Mountain for breathtaking views. No AT&T cell service, but there's Wifi (we stayed at on of the further spots and had fine wifi; no need to stream movies in such a great campsite so we didn't even try).

We stayed at Roan Mountain for 4 nights over Labor Day weekend. In general sites are small so do your research. Bathroom was what you would expect for state park - mostly clean, no frills. Bathhouse 5 had one shower and two toilets but we never had to wait. The park has great amenities for children including several playground areas and a pool open Memorial Day to Labor Day. We had no cell coverage at our site but could get one bar at the campground check in site. Wi-fi never worked while we were there. Our site had a small stream running behind it that our kids enjoyed playing in.

Great hiking nearby - we hiked the Peg Leg Mine Trail from the visitors center, portions of the Appalachian Trail from Carvers Gap up to the balds, and Elk River Falls. We visited the Millers Farmstead which my kids enjoyed. We also made a trip to Blind Squirrel Brewery which was about 20 mins a way but a nice excursion.

Overall we’d definitely return - lots to keep the kids entertained and you can’t beat the views from the Balds.

We chose this site because we are supporting our daughter on Appalachian trail. But it is a great state park and we would come back in a minute. We would choose a different site which would be longer and a little more level. I would recommend this to anyone who is camping with an RV.

Beautiful mountain State Park with higher altitude and cooler temperatures! Well loved by all so reservations are a must. The weekends are filled to capacity with the week not far behind. Beautiful trails especially up on the mountain! The river was really low so the fishing was pretty much nonexistent. Our side had 50 amp, water, picnic table, fire pit made out of stones, and we were on the river. The sound of the babbling brook was a wonderful! There is music on Fridays and Saturdays and lots of programs all ending on Labor Day. The Wi-Fi was pretty much spotty/nonexistent unless you sat on their rockers in front of the check in office. Then it was wonderful! The lower section loop is big rig friendly. Don’t try it in the upper section if you have a big rig. No discounts given on the lower loop. Fabulous staff and friendly rangers! The road up to the campground from town is fairly small so be careful.

Smoky mountain bakers in Roan Mountain is a fantastic local restaurant. We had some wood fired pizza there that was out of this world! Going there this weekend for breakfast and to pick up some fresh sourdough bread!

Took a drive over to Boone for the day and went on some beautiful country roads! Mast general store especially the candy section is a must visit if you’ve never been.

Mostly shaded campsites. We had site 46. The pad was short, but just enough space for our Jayco pop-up camper, awning up and vehicle parked on pad also. The picnic table, grill, and fire pit were in a large wooded area. Could definitely accommodate a hammock. The bathhouse was right across from the campsite, which was convenient but put off a lot of light at night. Lot of hiking trails in the campground and within a short driving distance. Hosts were very helpful and readily available. Playground for children. Saw a lot of deer. Really nice place!

We have been here before but brought our 3 and 4 yo grandchildren. We were right across from the bathroom and the playground, yes plural, were just minutes away. It is a bit hilly but this is East TN and hills are required. The creek was just below or beside the playgrounds and mine had a wonderful time at all. This site had lots of room and the bathrooms were very clean. They have wireless service to greatly improve the cell service issue.
