“located within 150 acres of coastal woodland”
Melville Ponds Campground is owned by the Town of Portsmouth (the town does not take reservations for the campground, however) and is located within 150 acres of coastal woodland dotted by wetlands, ponds, and brooks. Hiking trails provide a variety of opportunities for bird watching and other forms of nature appreciation. Freshwater fishing is available at the upper and lower ponds. The campground boasts spacious wooded sites for RV's and tents and is conveniently located just minutes from area beaches and historic Newport.

Confirmed by 1 users | Last reported on May 19, 2020This is a very lovely campground, with a shady section of back-in sites with lots of trees and grass, and a sunny section with long pull-through sites. The pull-through sites are closer together than the back-in sites, but the pull-through sites are satellite friendly. We spent three nights in site F13, an end site that was very close to the Portsmouth dog park. We had a nice patio with a square, raised, concrete fire pit and a picnic table. The site was relatively level - we used only our front jacks. WiFi was well above average, but water pressure was below average. There are some nice hiking trails nearby, but if you have small dogs be aware there are coyotes in the area. We heard them howling late one night. The staff was friendly and helpful. Make sure to take Stringham off W Main, and then turn north on Sullivan Road to the park. The resurfacing of Sullivan is complete and it is smooth. I agree that it is a bit pricey for the amenities, but you are paying for the location - close to Newport. I would definitely stay there again. I wished we could have stayed longer
I would give an excellent rating if there were a couple of activities to do on site . Site was level gravel, FHU's, good spacing. Trees too thick for satellite. Good location to base out of while exploring the area. Overpriced at $65 per night.

Campsite 214 is by far one of the best campsites we have had in a longtime. The camp hosts were super friendly and inviting. Our campsite was nestled in the back corner between trees. It was a quiet nights rest and felt as if we were the only ones in the park. The sites are level and fairly large. The bathhouse was clean and showers had good pressure. We had shared with the camp hosts that we came from a KOA the night before and had a bad experience. To our surprise when we were setting up our trailer they had delivered a bundle of wood on the house and some magic color for the kids to enjoy their night. Those little touches will be remembered! Put this campground on your list for a true camping experience.

We were very happy with the customer service at Melville Ponds. We just couldn't get level at our first site (think it was #216). We stopped by the office and they found us another site right away, apologized, and came by later to make sure we were ok. What great customer service. The shower rooms are really nice and they are close to a dog park. We drove into Newport to walk the Cliff Walk which is beautiful. We spent an afternoon at Newport Vineyard which was really fun.

The campground, owners and occupants were great!
The sites are small stone base and leveled, nice firepits and picnic tables at each.
With the virus at the moment, they're only taking self contained units, but they are open!
Give them a call!
Just a short drive to Newport!
I know we'll be back!

We stayed here last minute because of Mass. getting so strict. The price for the site is too steep for what is there. They are very flat but these sites are close together. For the price they should at least build a nice lattice partition so you aren't dining right next to the neighbors sewer hose. I've paid less and had wider sites.

you are 15 mins north of Newport.....you are in middle of a wood park. Our campsite was very private and in a dense woods area. Great little park. Would definitively stay again. So you can be in the quiet or within 15 mins you can enjoy the marinas and beaches of Newport. Great location, great park.

We arrived following the website instructions and signage for our two nights stay. Our GPS wanted to have us turn on Bradbury by a school, which would have been fine too. The office was closed but our arrival package was in the check in box. We proceeded to FHU site 107, which we had chosen online. We had a tough back-in on the corner. Thank goodness the site across the street was empty and we could pull into it and maneuver into our site. The site was just long enough for our 39’ fifth wheel. WiFi and Cable worked well. We got 3 bars on Verizon and 1 bar on AT&T. There were a lot of shade trees so doubtful we could have used our satellite. Melville pond was a nice campground (CG) with a state park type feel. The CG was in the city but you would not know it. There was a trail from the campground that led to community recreation trails and a nice-sized dog park just outside the CG. The CG has seasonal and plenty of short-term sites. If you are a tent camper they have separate area from the RV sites with very nice sites by a little stream. The CG also had propane and firewood for sale. Upon departure from site 107, we had to pull across the site into the road that leads to the tent camping and back out on to the main CG road in order to make the turn on the corner. Be careful chosing a site with anything over 40' in the treed area. Overall we enjoyed our stay.

We stayed here during the week - the place was quiet, well kept and filled with respectful families who followed quiet hours. We stayed in one of the better sites since it was shaded and semi private. We felt there was enough room to be comfortable and enjoyed our stay very much- the campground is very centrally located, close to the beach, Newport and the rail trail in Bristol. We would definitely stay here again.

This spot was a fine place to explore Newport but WAY overpriced. I was there in the off season so it was $65 a night, but even that was much more than it should be. Spots were fine and there is a city dog park and trails right there. I had plenty of Verizon signal to work without my booster. The bathrooms were gross and the motion light turned off while I was in the shower. If it was a more reasonable price I would recommend it, but the crazy upcharge it too much.
