“an extremely popular site with fishermen, boaters, & swimmers”
West Branch State Park's large 2,650-acre lake with its many forks and coves is extremely popular with fishermen, boaters and swimmers. The park's 5,379-acres of meadows and woodlots provide an excellent backdrop for camping, hiking and horseback riding. West Branch State Park is located on the west branch of the Mahoning River in Portage County. The river was named for the Delaware Indian word mahonink meaning "at the salt lick". In early days, a salt works was located southeast of present-day Warren along the river. The salt, which attracted a variety of wildlife, was harvested by Indians and early settlers.

Stayed here one night on our way to PA from IL. Clean, beautiful state park. Friendly people. Loved it and wished we could have stayed longer.
West Branch State Park is very conveniently located just off I-76 (less than 5 miles). With 200+ sites and boat docks, the park is well suited for fishing trips and families alike. Mid week, we only had one fellow camper on the loop; the majority of others in the area were retired folks since local schools are in session. However, weekend reservations are nearly 100% booked so book well in advance for the best spots.
The park is made up of multiple loops on a small peninsula. Many are water front, though, in September the water was quite low so areas you'd expect to have quiet inlets for water fowl were mudbogs (though surprisingly no mosquitoes). Our site was 21: it had a rather steep slope and relatively little real estate side to side for under the awning. Instead, the majority of area (firepit and picnic table) were at the rear of the site along the water and woods affording more privacy. The best sites, atleast in the southern most loop are 17, 16, and 19 in descending order. 17 has lots surrounding space and adjacent woods for extra privacy and lake views. 16 is nearly the same but less space and privacy. 19 has a relatively steep slope back towards the lake. The northern loop adjacent to the swimming beach had primarily short parking so less suitable for a travel trailer.
A gas station is just north of the park along side the interstate for firewood. No firewood appeared to be available in the park itself. Free games, a mini library, and free loaner life preservers are available in the park. A centrally located relatively modern playground with two sizeable sandboxes and a sand volleyball court are available and well maintained. The bathhouses are immaculately clean, well appointed (step stools for kids) with locking individual shower stalls. Handicap access units were also available.
Overall the sites were quiet, though, that was probably because of the limited number of campers mid-week. The loudest noises were the fishing boats trolling along with outboard motors. Excellent cell coverage as expected near an interstate.
$26 a night gets you an electric side, though, full hooks are available in the interior sites (though almost no tree coverage). There is also a $4 a night out-of-state fee which may or may not apply to other campers.

Great location for camping- quiet, serene, and beautiful views. This was our first trip in our pop-up camper and we enjoyed it very much. Nice easy drive to Cuyahoga Valley National Park. We would highly recommend this campsite! Bathrooms were very very clean also!

Be aware most sites are not full hookups. We thought we reserved a full hookup but it was electric only. Our bad. The route we took came from I-76 through Edinburg. Rock Spring road from Edinburg to the park is very rough, and it's about 5 miles long. The sides of the roads have been patched and not very well. Check in was quick as we only had to pick up our car pass and park map. However, we had some questions later and the staff seemed pretty uninformed. We had to pull into a parking lot on the other side of the check in area to unhook our car and then backtrack to our site. We were in site 1, and just so you know, sites 1-3 are right in front of where you check in. There must be quite the roadblock on busy check in days while people are trying to back into these spaces. Most of the sites are fairly short so few will handle large units. Site 1 is paved, long and pretty level. We were not able to get satellite coverage due to trees. Verizon cell worked fine. There is no WII FI. Quiet at night, and lots of boats and jet skis during the day. The showers are utilitarian. There was a sign indicating if the water was cold to let it run 15 minutes!?! Be ready for the no see um biters when you are outside! The picnic table has seen better days. Seems like a busy weekend place for local boaters. The price for value is low at $28 plus $8 reservation fee for electric only. We wouldn't stay here again.

On the weekend before and through July 4, 2017, we were on Site 18. As we had reserved ahead of time, check-in was quick and easy. And it was very easy to locate our site.
The site is the only site on the inner circle of a loop. We had the most beautiful weather for this time of year (low 80's with low humidity) and a beautiful cross breeze from the lake. We could see some of the lake from two different directions, could hear the lake activity and the water.
The park itself is very nice. Many wooded sites. Large playground for the kids. Several years ago the restrooms were upgraded and they have remained well taken care of. In fact, the hosts do a great job keeping each site as well as public areas clean and ready for the next occupant.
Sites are varied for all size rigs, from tents to motorhomes. There is boating on the lake and a small beach and boat launch inside the campground as well as a larger beach and marina across the lake in the state park.
We have been camping at this park for many years. Other than some sites are better than others, we've never had a bad experience.
The greatest experience this weekend was that Brian from Campendium was camped across the road from us. He posted a picture of our American flag on Instagram. He came over the next morning and introduced himself. We had a nice chat and learned a bit about Campendium. A very nice young man and a pleasure to meet. So, I guess what I'm saying is, you never know who you will run into camping anywhere in the US.

We really liked our campsite at West Branch State Park. I was a little worried when I saw an earlier reviewer who also stayed in site 21 mention how un-level it is. We're in a 27 foot Airstream and needed to put the front end almost all the way down in order to get level, but fortunately we were fine. Anything longer than that might have a problem. Many of the sites in this campground are un-level, so it could be hit or miss.
The loop we stayed in seemed to be the most private. Many sites have lake access.
Over the air HDTV worked great and included our favorite CBS.

I would have given this campground 5 stars but for the lack of level sites from what I could tell. My own site required all of my blocks (I have two packs) to get almost level. The lake views are terrific. Did hear some motorized boats but not too bad. The bathrooms are clean and the showers adequate. There is a washer & dryer and outside sinks for all to use. There are a few hiking trails though not the challenging kind.

Site 10 had a nice view of lake and close to clean bathrooms and showers. Showers were cement with a bench and hook. Most sites were level and had electric. Small non electric site loop ($4 cheaper/night). Most sites didn’t have privacy vegetation between sites but many were spaced apart …for some privacy. We stayed again on site 167 - no view but close to beach. Very friendly and knowledgeable office staff.
We Signed up for guided kayak sunset trip.

We enjoyed this state park for its kayaking and hiking and lovely views. As newbie RV ers though I would not recommend site 16. I am sure if you were very skilled at backing in it would not be that much of an issue but it was for us. The asphalt pad has a big drop off on one side which not only made backing in challenging but then our steps were really high off the ground. None of the other sites around us seemed to be like that, just site 16.
