“Explore the natural history of Earth!”

The Museum of Geology at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology explores the natural history of Earth through scientific inquiry, preserves specimens and data as a dedicated repository for scientific research, and promotes understanding of geoscience through outreach. Geology is a fascinating and broad science, which incorporates many other sciences! At the Museum of Geology, you'll find extensive exhibits focusing on Paleontology - the study of ancient life, and Mineralogy - the study of minerals, including gems, crystals, and the rocks they form. Our displays are engaging and accessible to everyone. The Museum is located on the campus of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology on the third floor of the O'Harra Building. The Museum has been collecting and displaying new specimens since 1885.Come and see our fascinating mounted skeletons of dinosaurs, mammals, marine reptiles, and fish! Dozens of rare fossils from the White River Badlands are arranged in time-specific dioramas. Our mineral displays include the Hall of South Dakota Minerals, meteorites, and a fluorescent mineral room that's sure to fascinate. See unique specimens from as far away as Antarctica. The mission of the Museum of Geology is to collect, conserve, curate, interpret, exhibit, and disseminate knowledge of paleontologically and geologically significant objects and serve as the repository for such objects from South Dakota and the Northern Great Plains, as well as from other areas that enhance our understanding of South Dakota paleontology and geology.
