San Francisco de Asis Mission Church is a historic and architecturally significant church on the main plaza of Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico. Built between 1772 and 1816, it is one of the finest extant examples of a Spanish Colonial New Mexico mission church, and is a popular target for photographers. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970.
This is such a lovely, peaceful place. It also still has an active congregation, so be considerate! Sit for a minute and enjoy their beautiful roses as you take in the stark lines of the church against the sky. There is a gift shop, but it has limited hours. DON'T be like the tourists we saw, who got there right after it closed and wheedled the priest and shop employee into re-opening for them, when the priest was getting ready for an evening mass! Truly worth a stop.
