“outdoor wall advertising museum”
The International Walldog Mural & Sign Art Museum is dedicated to the preservation and appreciation of the outdoor wall advertisting signs painted in the days before electronic mass media. The painters who created those early signs called themselves "Walldogs." The displays which are found at the museum tell the history of the early sign painters who created their art on the sides of brick buildings, barns, and other structures. Examples of those early signs can still be seen throughout the Midwest and, though faded, peeling, and sometimes barely readable, these "ghost signs" remain an important part of our collective cultural and commercial history. The modern "Walldogs" work to preserve the techniques and artistic aesthetic of those early artists. The museum presents many historic and modern artifacts associated with the craft of outdoor mural and advertising sign painting. In addition to the permanent displays, there are drawings, color renderings, and other works of art available for purchase at the museum.
So many don't know Pontiac, IL is COVERED in murals, some done by a few famous artists, but most done by the "Walldogs." The museum does a great job of telling the story of the Walldogs. Also ask to see the painted dresses in the back room. I promise you won't be disappointed.
Would have loved to stop for a visit but the website is out of date. March 2018, location listed is the Museum of Gilded Arts (which was a sweet little consolation prize while the Walldogs museum is currently in transition into the RT 66 building apparently. I’d recommend visit g the location at 217 Mill Street for a visit to that little museum full of golden treasures). Just a shame the website wasn’t up to date. I was bringing a friend for her birthday and we were surprised the museum was closed and not at the location noted as being the ‘new’ location on the website.
