“a unique civic monument”
A 12-foot-tall stainless steel sculpture of Mothman was unveiled. It is a unique civic monument, an over-the-top effigy that you'd expect see on the handle of a Barbarian collectibles knife, not on a downtown street in West Virginia. Mothman is a legendary moth-like creature reportedly seen in the Point Pleasant area of West Virginia from 15 November 1966 to 15 December 1967. The first newspaper report was published in the Point Pleasant Register dated 16 November 1966, titled "Couples See Man-Sized Bird...Creature...Something". Mothman was introduced to a wider audience by Gray Barker in 1970, later popularized by John Keel in his 1975 book The Mothman Prophecies, claiming that Mothman was related to a wide array of supernatural events in the area and the collapse of the Silver Bridge. The 2002 film The Mothman Prophecies, starring Richard Gere, was based on Keel's book .
If you're visiting Point Pleasant you cannot leave without taking a selfie with the Mothman statue. He's big. He's silver. And he's got a nice set of buns on him!
Cool statue, if you're a self proclaimed cryptozoologist this little town is the place to go!
Right off the freeway. Great place to stop right before crossing the bridge.
Point Pleasant is so charming! The statue depicts the Mothman Legend perfectly. Make sure you grab a cup of coffee from the coffee shop on the corner by the statue and try one of their delicious brownies! Yum!
He was big.
I accidentally hit the statue with my car so if you see something missing ignore it.
By “accidentally” I mean when I went to see it during the night he came to life and tried to attack me.
I of course ran into him to try and buy myself some time.
I didn’t stay to see what happened.
Be wary during your next visit.
10/10 experience, would hit mothman again
mothman is STACKED!
Its not a particularly huge statue and it doesn't seem to exactly follow witness accounts of what Mothman was reported to look like, but a fun and eccentric statue nonetheless.
Go down Main Street and you can’t miss it. It’s near the Mothman Museum. A seriously great photo op!
