Our Take

Even though popular belief holds that the Mothman that terrorized Point Pleasant, West Virginia in the 1960s was a harbinger of doom, the locals are fond of the mysterious being and have erected a (totally shredded, beef-cakey) chrome statue of him in the center of town. It's right next to the "world's only" Mothman Museum and stands in the shadow of the haunted Lowe Hotel, keeping watch over the town.

“a unique civic monument”

A 12-foot-tall stainless steel sculpture of Mothman was unveiled. It is a unique civic monument, an over-the-top effigy that you'd expect see on the handle of a Barbarian collectibles knife, not on a downtown street in West Virginia. Mothman is a legendary moth-like creature reportedly seen in the Point Pleasant area of West Virginia from 15 November 1966 to 15 December 1967. The first newspaper report was published in the Point Pleasant Register dated 16 November 1966, titled "Couples See Man-Sized Bird...Creature...Something".[1] Mothman was introduced to a wider audience by Gray Barker in 1970, later popularized by John Keel in his 1975 book The Mothman Prophecies, claiming that Mothman was related to a wide array of supernatural events in the area and the collapse of the Silver Bridge. The 2002 film The Mothman Prophecies, starring Richard Gere, was based on Keel's book .

If you're visiting Point Pleasant you cannot leave without taking a selfie with the Mothman statue. He's big. He's silver. And he's got a nice set of buns on him!

He was big.
I accidentally hit the statue with my car so if you see something missing ignore it.
By “accidentally” I mean when I went to see it during the night he came to life and tried to attack me.
I of course ran into him to try and buy myself some time.
I didn’t stay to see what happened.
Be wary during your next visit.
10/10 experience, would hit mothman again

Right off the freeway. Great place to stop right before crossing the bridge.

Cool statue, if you're a self proclaimed cryptozoologist this little town is the place to go!

Worth the stop in this little town to see the statue of mothman and visit the cute little museum (right across the street) and visit the other fun local shops. Loads of choices for souvenirs- everything you could want (for mothman and other cryptids). We’re glad we stopped!

A nice spot to stop and stretch your legs - there is plenty of free parking all around and a spot right next door to grab coffee (Coffee Grinders). The statue is cool (especially the eyes) and my boys enjoyed both seeing it, and all the fun stories concocted in the car leading up to it!

Love it!! Cool photo op! The museum closes at 5pm. We got there just after it closed. It looked cool from the window. Also, an amazing spot just across the street off the river is a path with painted murals along the walls depicting the battle of point pleasant. We also noted a riverboat path, so that may be something to do as well.

As silly roadside attractions go, this one ranks pretty high. I didn't have time for the museum, but the Mothman statue is ... a statue of the Mothman. Worth a stop and a photo to add to your collection.

Fun stop along the way! Also a nice park up the block showcasing the history of Point Pleasant. If you are hungry - stop by Coffee Grinders on the corner for a sandwich or drink. The cookies are great!!
