“A Parkersburg vaudeville original”
Welcome to the historic Smoot Theatre! In the Spring of 1989, only days before the scheduled demolition, the Smoot Theatre in Downtown Parkersburg, West Virginia, was purchased on a land contract by a volunteer group who believed the 1926 vaudeville house was too valuable to destroy. Having been closed for a period of three years, it had become dank and dirty. Enthusiastic volunteers set about working to clean, scrub, polish all that was “cleanable” in order to be ready for “opening night". Today, the Smoot Theatre continues to provide live entertainment. There is music, jazz, big bands, country, bluegrass, rock and folk. Children’s theatre, comedy, dance, lectures, one-man shows, meetings, seminars, and even our famous dessert tours which happen on our stage. And there’s still plenty of room for you... come join us! Built in 1926, the now-restored Smoot Theater is believed to be the site of some strange goings-on. Witnesses have reported strange sounds and shadows at night, cold spots, and unexplained electrical issues.
