“on beautiful Black Lake”
Onaway State Park is located on the southeast shore of beautiful Black Lake in Presque Isle County. The park encompasses 158 acres of rugged but picturesque land, including sand cobblestone beaches, large unique rock out-croppings and a diverse variety of trees. You may observe all these natural features by hiking the park's three-mile nature trail. The campground, set among virgin white pines, offers solitude and serenity and plenty of family fun. One of the DNR's oldest state parks, it was acquired in 1920 from Presque Isle County and private donors. The park was dedicated in 1921. It is located in an area that was once frequented by the Chippewa Indians. The park now has canoes, kayaks and rowboats to rent.

This state park is beautiful. They have tent, RV and cabin spots, a small beach and the lake is calm enough to take a canoe out for an easy paddle. There are some short and easy hikes in the park as well. We stayed at the cabin. The cabin is relatively new, clean, spacious and even has a mini fridge so you can sip a nice cold one while you watch the sun set over the lake.
Only 8 sites filled during the week (Sun-Fri) in late September. Our site #61 was on a little slope so make sure you bring enough leveling blocks as not all sites are level. There are no paved sites, all are gravel and grass. There is some road noise due to the boat launch near by, but nothing real bothersome.

This is an older park. However, it’s well maintained. We stayed over Labor Day weekend. The fellow campers were quiet and pleasant. We stayed at site 48.
