While we were visiting the Lassen Park in August last year we camped for 3 days at Lassen NP. There, people that we met, after some discussions we have about geology and volcanoes, suggested as to visit the Subway Cave which is an easy 15 minutes drive from our campsite.

Since my sons are thrilled with anything that has to do with lava and volcanoes, we decided to give it a go. It was a great surprise to find out that there was no Entry Fee, and the surrounding area was quite well organized.

Picnic tables were there for a quick lunch break and the nature is great. There were stairs towards the cave, and when we get in...wow!!!! I could never imagine that Black could be that Black!!!! But we came prepared, since we were on a tour with my boys in the area to discover geological wonder, and we had headlights and we were dressed in an appropriate way for a cave exploration. The temperatures there are kinda chilly and the rock is hard and can be slippery in places, therefore wear some good hiking boots.

The length of the tube is about 5 minutes walking, nothing to see really, but the feeling of walking in a lava tube that about 2,000 years ago was flowing from the depths of the Earth is just very strong!!! It can even give you the creeps!!! Definitely worth the visit !!!

But, in case you go there, make sure you don't litter the place, as i ve seen many people doing!!! Nature deserves our love and respect !!!

Neat little walk. Totally worth it if you are driving by. Right off the road, and a short 15-20 minute hike through the lava tube and back via a forest trail. It’s about 20 degrees cooler in the tube than outside (not sure that’s the case in winter), so bring a sweatshirt. Oh, and bring a flashlight...the tube isn’t lit and it’s pitch dark when you are away from the entrance/exit.
