“showing the best art of our time”
MASS MoCA exhibits work by many of the most important artists of today—both well known, and emerging—focusing on large-scale and complex installations that are impossible to realize in conventional museums. Our broad, soaring galleries with 110,000 square feet of open, flexible space and their robust industrial character have proven both inspiring and empowering to artists. An essential and integral part of MASS MoCA's mission are the more than 75 performances staged year-round, including popular music, contemporary dance, alternative cabaret, world music dance parties, outdoor silent films with live music, documentaries, and avant-garde theater. MASS MoCA’s Education Department offers a wide-range of learning opportunities for students, teenagers, teachers, adults, and families. Programs include: hands-on art classes; lectures; Art Assembly performances for schools; artist talks; guided tours; art camps; after school programs; and Kidspace, a child-centered art gallery and hands-on studio.
One of my all-time favorite museums. Even as a first grader, I was obsessed with the upside down hanging trees that line the walk-way. MASS MoCA has a unique flair for quirky exhibits that actually inspire me to think and build (what more could you ask for). The space itself is a refurbished industrial building and its bare structure provides a really cool backbone for the exhibits that bring it to life. While you can expect to see some raw and weird art exhibits, there are also some really great shows (plays, live music, dance) that occur in their black box theater. I've seen some great concerts at the venue (Old Crow Medicine Show!). It's always decked out with light faculties, set designs, and beer for the masses. Pretty small and intimate venue with the capacity to hold a huge variety of projects/parties.
I really enjoyed the Sol Le Witt wall drawing exhibit and the In the light of the shadow installation. The museum was a little bit disorganized, but would go back to explore.
Well worth the visit. In the summer, mention the Williamstown Theater Festival and you might even get in for free.
One of my favorite places in the area. Bears returning trips with its various and changing exhibits.
Great museum within the architecture of an textile factory that has graced with the century. Great displays and great walk-through appeal with such a vast setting. Both indoor and outdoor displays.
