“Adobe home started by Captain Dana in 1839”
The Dana Adobe or "Casa de Dana" is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was the home of Boston sea captain William Dana, who in 1837 was granted the Rancho Nipomo in Southern California. Captain Dana hosted figures such as Henry Tefft and John C. Fremont in his Nipomo home, which also served as an important exchange point on California's first official mail route between Monterey and Los Angeles. Entry to the Dana Adobe House is available for tours by appointment only. Open: Saturday & Sunday 11:00 am to 3:00 pm (Subject to Holidays and Private Events)
This is a well preserved adobe, the visitor center was very informative and the staff was very helpful. While you can walk up to the adobe and look in the windows you need to schedule a tour to be able to go inside. There is a lot of information including a couple of videos to watch at the visitor center. this a large property with multiple trails that you can walk, so bring good walking shoes. We went the second weekend in October and the sun was shinining bright with warm temperatures glad I had a hat. I would suggest pants to be worn if you want to walk the trails as there were signs warning to look out for snakes and poison ivy. I definitely plan to return to be able to tour the inside and I'd like to getto walk all the trails, I didn't have good walking shoes.
