“The wine specialist”
Our New Hampshire winery started with six grapevines planted in 1982 by Dr Peter Oldak, an Emergency Department physician. He eventually planted over 60 varieties of grapes to determine which varieties survive New Hampshire winters, ripen in the summer, and make quality wine. Since then, Peter has pioneeered viticulture and winemaking in New Hampshire. In 1990, Peter and his wife Brenda, a Clinical Specialist in Nursing, established Jewell Towne Vineyards. Located in South Hampton, New Hampshire, on the southward facing slopes of the Powwow River, Jewell Towne possessed an ideal microclimate for growing grapes. In 1994, Jewell Towne Vineyards became a licensed commercial winery. Since then, Jewell Towne, New Hampshire's oldest winery, has won over 150 medals in national and international competition. Peter's expertise has put him in high demand as a speaker at seminars on viticulture and winemaking. In 1998, Peter and Brenda built the winery, an 18th century historic reproduction, New England post and beam barn. The winery offers a charming tasting room, wine cellar, bottling room, gift shop, and art gallery balcony showcasing Brenda's paintings and those of other artists. The Oldaks' children, Tenley and Trevor, played a significant role in growing the family business. Dr Oldak has mentored many beginning grape growers and wine makers, some of whom have later established their own commercial wineries. Along with the reputation for growing consistently , high quality grapes and making stellar wine, Peter lead the way for the wine industry and its related agri-tourism in the state of New Hampshire. Peter shares his expertise withother wineries, works with the NH State Liquor Commission, and has introduced important winery specific legislation - including the enabling legislation for the sale of wine at Farmers' Markets. He has founded and served as President of the New Hampshire Winery Association. Peter is also the Chairperson of the New Hampshire Chapter of the American Wine Society. Currently the winery produces approximately 15,000 gallons, or six thousand cases a year. Our wine can be found in over 150 stores and restaurants in new hampshire and massachusetts. jewell Towne Vineyard s wine is carried by the hannaford, Market Basket, and Shaws supermarkets, and by the new hampshire State Liquor Stores.
