Newport’s Cliff Walk overlooks the ocean on one side and the backyards of some of the country’s most gorgeous mansions on the other. Even if you’ll never inhabit a Gilded Age mansion of your own, you can at least feel like an heiress for a moment as you walk along the rocky Rhode Island coast.
“enjoy the natural beauty of the Newport shoreline”
The Cliff Walk along the eastern shore of Newport, RI is world famous as a public access walk that combines the natural beauty of the Newport shoreline with the architectural history of Newport's gilded age. Wildflowers, birds, geology ... all add to this delightful walk. What makes Cliff Walk unique is that it is a National Recreation Trail in a National Historic District. In 1975 the walk was designated as a National Recreation Trail ... the 65th in the nation and first in New England. The walk runs 3.5 miles and about two-thirds of the walk is in easy walking condition. Parts of the southern half of the walk are a rough trail over the natural and rugged New England rocky shoreline. Walkers need to be especially careful and alert in these challenging areas. RI State Law seems to apply to Limit Liability of property owners.
The Cliff Walk is beautiful. My wife and I walked the entire length on our honeymoon. It takes you along the back-side of some of the mansions, notably the Breakers. I love climbing over rocks, so the challenging areas were a blast. Be warned, however, that there are no bathrooms along the Cliff Walk, and none for quite a ways when you reach the southern beach at the end of it. There is a point where you are warned that it is about to get more difficult, I highly recommend you take a break and find a bathroom before you continue, because there is no escape from that point forward.

They sell tours to this attraction, but we just walked along ourselves. It's a really easy, mostly flat walk, with a few stairs here and there. Even the parts they warn you about are pretty easy. The rocky part is flat and sturdy, so don't be afraid unless you have difficultly walking. They have bathrooms at one point on the walk only.
Absolutely beautiful. Nice trail and gorgeous houses.
So so pretty! Parking is weird but can be achieved. The walk is 1/4 mile one direction or 2 miles the other direction. Great for sunset!
Great views walking along here
Look for signs that say “ the breakers”. For parking
