“Notable for the architectural significance of its tombs and mausoleums”

It's the oldest of the seven city operated cemeteries in New Orleans. Lafayette is the "American" cemetery, while St. Louis is a Creole cemetery. You'll notice many Irish and German names on the tombs here, versus more French and Spanish names in St. Louis. Lots of the people in the older tombs, you'll also notice, died of yellow fever. More beautiful than the average cemetery, there are lots of ornate crypts and old gravestones. Added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 1, 1972,

New Orleans has some of the best cemeteries in the country and Lafayette is one of my favorites. It's less popular than cemetery #1 and #2, but it's equally as beautiful and has lots of character.

While visiting the Garden District this is a must see. If you google free walking tours for this area, the cemetery tour will probably come up. We printed it and then took it with us. It was a wonderful tour and explained many things in detail. A lot of the people visiting that day also had the same tour.

The history in this area inspires awe. We did a free walking tour. A pamphlet explains some of the more famous tombs. History and stories just flows out of the cemetery. Definitely a must see for your trip.
