“celebrating the origin & genre of jazz”

New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park is a U.S. National Historical Park in the Tremé neighborhood of New Orleans, Louisiana, near the French Quarter. It was created in 1994 to celebrate the origins and evolution of jazz, America’s most widely-recognized genre of music. The park consists of 4 acres (16,000 m2) within Louis Armstrong Park leased by the National Park Service. The park has an office, visitors center, and concert venue several blocks away in the French Quarter. It provides a setting to share the cultural history of the people and places that helped shape the development and progression of jazz in New Orleans. The park preserves information and resources associated with the origins and early development of jazz through interpretive techniques designed to educate and entertain. Located in the heart of New Orleans French Quarter, the park's primary visitor center is a good starting point to learn about our diverse opportunities to learn about the history and culture of New Orleans jazz. Ranger-led demonstrations, talks, video documentaries and live music are held at both our visitor center and the Old U.S. Mint six days a week. Stop by and listen for awhile. The Old U. S. Mint, features a world class performance venue and jazz museum on the second and third floors.

We arrived just in time for the Ranger talk. Ranger walked us through the history of Jazz music and Jazz influence on the city. Ranger was a talented artist and he played the pieces on the piano for us. Talk was informative and engaging. Plus 45 minutes of free A/C in the summer in New Orleans can't be beat. Our girls did the Jr Ranger books. Ranger was very interactive with them. Great stop

The park is on a beautiful site. We were surprised at the condition of the buildings and the lack of upkeep on this park. We talked to some folks who were walking through and found out that the park was damaged by Hurricane Katrina and there has been no financial support to renovate this historical park. We were very saddened that preserving the history of jazz in New Orleans has not a priority.
