“tallest dune on the atlantic”
There are many reasons why millions of people visit Jockey's Ridge State Park. Some come to see the tallest sand dune on the Atlantic coast; others come for the spectacular sunsets. At Jockey's Ridge State Park you can experience the world of the desert. Shifting sands, high winds, extreme temperatures and a lack of water make the park resemble barren environments such as the Sahara Desert. You also can explore the wonders of an estuarine environment. The tidal waters of the Roanoke Sound, the western boundary of the park, is a rich habitat for a variety of plant and animal life, making these waters the source of much of the sea's bounty.Whatever the reason for a visit to Jockey's Ridge, a trip to this unique park will give you even more reasons to come back again and again.
These directions take you to a small entrance within a residential neighborhood, but there is a cul-de-sac to park in. The dunes were very cool! I watched lots of kids and adults flyers by kites and there were hang gliding lessons going on. I thought flip flops were a good idea... I thought wrong. My toes were rubbed raw and the sand was scalding hot. I should have worn tennis shoes even if sand gets in them!
cool place to stop, kids especially will love running down the dunes!
Very cool pit stop to get out and walk with some incredible views, especially at sunset. Get ready to get sandy.
VC closed for renovations so if you plan to do any rentals I believe they are from a nearby shop. We took our “sleds” and didn’t have much luck with sand-boarding but loved flying our kite! We watched the hang gliders practice their take off. Lots of walking so be prepared for Sandy terrain. No entry fee so worth the stop to visit and check it out. Pretty nice views.
Highly recommended to visit before sunset. Great views that almost make you feel like you on top of the world.
The visitor center is pretty basic, but has good information about the sand dunes, critters and area. Great place to go for sunset. The sand was much softer than the beach and didn't have shells. It's a must see for this area. And it's free!
