The Superior Explorer was built by the Breaux Craft Company in 1973 and was re-powered in 1998 with twin 300 hp John Deere diesels. She is 35 feet long and 12 1/2 feet wide. Seaworthy and certified for up to 12 divers, the boat cruises at 25 knots and is stable at anchor, with a head and heated, enclosed cabin for a comfortable diving experience. Captains Linda Laraway and Randy Livsey offer Lake Superior shipwreck diving for beginning, intermediate and expert divers. They also offer photographic dives with outstanding opportunities for wreck and close-up photography. The shipwrecks in Munising Bay have been preserved by the clear, cool waters of Lake Superior. Many of the wreck sites located within the Alger Preserve are also protected by Grand Island from the fury of lake storms, so very seldom are dive trips canceled because of the weather. Underwater visibility in the Alger Preserve is considered to be among the best in the Midwest. Thirty feet at depth of one hundred feet is not uncommon. There are mooring buoys and descent lines at all primary dive sites. You will also be able to enter sea caves which are underwater sandstone cliffs where sandstone has been eroded by the waves. Although the caves are shallow, usually only about 20 feet deep, they offer spectacular shallow water diving.
