“The crown jewel”

The Route of the Hiawatha mountain bike or hike trail is 15 miles long with 10 train tunnels and 7 sky high trestles. The 1.66 mile long St. Paul Pass Tunnel, also know as the Taft Tunnel, is a highlight of the trail that follows the crest of the Bitterroot Mountains near Lookout Pass Ski Area.  The best part is.... it's all downhill with shuttle buses available to transport you and your bike back to the top.  This family friendly trail is easily enjoyed by a wide variety of people from young children to super seniors.  Trail passes, shuttle tickets and mountain bike rentals are available at Lookout Pass Ski Area located right alongside Interstate 90, Exit 0, at the Idaho-Montana state line, 12 miles east of historic Wallace, Idaho. Lodge and bike rental shop open at 8:00 AM PDT.  The trail is open from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM PDT daily through September 27.  Phone: 208-744-1234.

So glad we did this! Our family of 6 (4 teens) started early and finished in 2.5 hrs. We went at a leisurely pace and stopped a few times. Additional things to note: you will probably get very muddy, mountain bikes preferred as it is rocky and wet in several places, the first tunnel (over a mile long) is very cold, and the shuttle doesn’t pick up until 11:45am pacific time BUT get there early. We did this on a Saturday and started around 8am. We were the only ones in the trail but by the time we finished they said there were 800! Plan on at least 5 hrs from start to finish for this adventure.

This gem was on my bucket list and the reason we drove 800 miles! The ride is very easy and absolutely doable for kids or to have a bike trailer in tow. If you are in the area do not pass this one up. Incredibly beautiful country, well documented historically along the path and the views will take your breath away. You can rent bikes at the ski resort located at exit 0 or get off at exit 5 if you have your own and hit the trail. You are required to have a head lamp or light on your bike. You will ride through a series of tunnels and you will need them. They will not let you ride the trail if you don't have a light. There were 4 total in our party (2 adults 2 kids) total cost to ride the trail and be shuttled back to our car was $62. Well worth it! You can pay either at the resort or at the trailhead.
