Toll House Mount Jackson, VA

Once one of the nation's major north-south arteries, Old Valley Pike is now the local road that runs parallel to Interstate 81. Old hotels and restaurants dot the length of it. Every few miles, early travelers had to fork over a toll to pay for the road's upkeep. This little home south of Mount Jackson is one of the last toll houses standing. There would have been an actual turnpike in front of it. No one can seem to slap a build date on the home but it would be post 1840 and probably antebellum.  The toll house is in ruins. Through windows you can see the trap door in what was once a kitchen (complete with the ugliest linoleum in the world). The home is not safe to enter. The front yard isn't very safe either due to a terrifyingly deep-looking covered well.
