Confirmed by 5 users | Last reported on May 28, 2022If you are driving on I-90 through South Dakota, you see the signs for the Corn Palace. This is that dusty old town. Except it isn't. Past the tacky tourist area there is a thriving town with green grass, trees and A BIG LAKE!? What a shock. We were expecting a dusty old county park with a little pond, and here is this wooded oasis on a large lake. Full hookups for $36 with WiFi and cell service. Most sites have shade, but a few have a lot of sun. Some are even close to the water. The only disappointment was that swimming was temporarily not allowed because of dangerous algae. But we were just spending the night anyway. Grocery store, etc in town. Nice camp host. Laundromat and bike rental.

We tried the KOA and a couple of other spots but they were full before lunch, so we took a chance on this nice little community campground.
Bathrooms were clean and we had plenty of shade. This is a good place to stop for supplies and don't forget to visit the Corn Palace!

Was passing through but had to see the Corn Palace. Found this campground as was entered town. Site had 30 Amp & water. It is a city park and payment is by drop box. All sites are paved. Bathrooms clean and bright. Sites are first come first serve.
Food & fuel 1 block. Park sits high over Lake Mitchell.
Cell service was ok but not great. We couldn't get the cable to work.

So easy for an overnight on way to and back from Badlands/Blackhills. First weekend we had a back in right on the lake with water and electric. Second weekend we had a full hook up pull through...both very level with good hook ups. Bathrooms pretty spotless and heated. Very convenient location, checked out the Archeodome, which is a very cool dig site / historic museum a mile away. A bit of road noise at most sites, but nothing intolerable.

My family of 7 and my parents (in a 2nd RV) stayed here the night of June 14, 2019 for one night on our way to the Black Hills and then on to Yellowstone from Iowa. We stayed in site #14 and my parents were next to us in #12. Both sites were back-in and had water and electric. Note that site #14 does have a dumpster right next to it.
We were a little nervous staying at a city park but based on the reviews here on Campendium, we went ahead with our stay and we were very happy we did! It is a great campground!
Our sites had a trail behind them that led down to a little beach on the lake and there, my kids fished and all 3 of my boys caught fish. They had a good time in the relatively short stay we had. The campground was clean and although we did not have sewer connections at our sites, there was a dump station that we used. There were also flush toilets and a playground for the kids.
It was a warm 85 degrees and humid that day and got down to the 50's that night but there were barely any bugs yet. We had a very nice experience staying here and would definitely visit Lake Mitchell Campground again.

There is an RV spot over looking the lake I wish we had, its the best site in the campground. We settled for one across from a circle of tent camping that was unoccupied so we got a beautiful view of the lake and the sunset. If tent camping we would definitely stay down there! Easy drive throughs w camper and very friendly camp host. Wish we could have stayed longer to take the paddle boat out in the lake, there is access to swimming from the campground too. Little town of Mitchell is pretty neat as well.

We have a 41ft class A and there were a few spots we could fit into. We didn't make a reservation but arrived mid week for only 1 night. The host is super friendly and helped us. Very shaded and right on the lake.

Arrived on Saturday night in July. Luckily a few spots left. A little tight to get into our spot with our 34’ MH. Lots of families camping and having a good time. Water and electric hookup, dump station near host site. Quiet and beautiful temperatures. Glad we didn’t have anyone in the site next to us, because that would have been tight. Camp host was very friendly and nice.
