Memphis Botanic Garden strives to enhance lives by connecting people with nature, increasing awareness and appreciation of our environment. Our 96-acre property includes 23 specialty gardens, which provide an in-depth look into various families of plants, flowers, and trees. My Big Backyard family garden offers a place for jumping, splashing, digging, creating, and discovering the joys of time spent outdoors. The renowned Seijaku-en, Japanese Garden of Tranquility, is a popular attraction, with its recognizable red drum bridge and unique cultural features. Its newly-opened Herb Garden is one of the largest in the nation, and offers unique opportunities for programming and visitor experience.

For families with children of any age: this place was amazing! If I was local, I would have a yearly membership here. The beautiful gardens were amazing, yes, and beautifully kept and maintained. There are almost 30 gardens, including a Japanese garden with a Koi pond and quaint red bridge (you can buy fish food at the front desk when in season). There are formals gardens, rose garden, herb garden, so many majestic magnolia trees, etc. Multiple benches for resting spots. Very stroller and wheelchair friendly. Wishing fountains for tossing coins in.

Main highlight for the kids: “My Big Backyard” garden! ***Lots of fairly shallow water, so be careful with little children.*** Floating dock, splash pad area with “rain” coming and it flows into the “river”. There is a tree house, a maze, multiple themed playhouses (music, natural stick house, castle with catapult & dress up robes & sword in a stone, country/farm house). There is a secret passage, u-pick garden (so fun!), sand play area, and worm hill with tunnels to crawl through. Such a FUN place!

If we ever come back to Memphis, will definitely come here (with or without kids)!

I love Botanical Gardens and I try to visit the botanical garden of any city I visit. I arrived an hour before they closed, but I had time to walk quickly around and see the main points. Two hours hours would be good, maybe three hours if you like to read lots and really soak it all in.
