Withers Collection Museum & Gallery

The Withers photography collection is a priceless treasure. A cultural and educational archive that provides the public with an accurate pictorial view of this country's African-American history. It seems natural that the collection remains in Memphis. Ernest Withers was a native Memphian who had a lifelong love affair with the city of Memphis. The Collection, covering more than 60 years of 20th century history, is a learning tool and a teaching tool for students for educators.  The mission of The Withers Collection Museum & Gallery is to exhibit and interpret the photographic images for the public, the media and academia. The Collection is based on a volume of over a million images recorded by this renowned photojournalist. The foundation conducts ongoing forums, seminars and workshops to study Withers' powerful and unique images. Such public efforts create an open and ongoing dialogue that can help heal the wounds of racism.
