McAlester was named for James Jackson McAlester who served as Lieutenant Governor of Oklahoma and whose home is now a piece of the town’s history. It began as a log house with four rooms in then Indian Territory and over time was transformed to include a two-story Queen Anne style house. The home was renovated in the 1960’s and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The current owners have continued to renovate and preserve the home and were featured on HGTV’s If Walls Could Talk in 2008. Make sure to include the J.J. McAlester Mansion on your tour of historic downtown.
