America's first highway, the National Road was created in 1806 by President Thomas Jefferson. Although construction began in 1811 at Cumberland, Maryland, the "Ol' Pike" didn't reach Illinois until 1830. This simple dirt road opened the young state to settlers from the east. Marshall served as the gateway to the prairies of Illinois. The Welcome Center tells the story of the political figures, surveyors, and builders of the National Road. Visitors will enjoy the dioramas depicting the transportation eras. Talking mannequins share tales of the National Road.Open Wednesday through Saturday 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. For more information, call 217-826-2498.
