Tumble In RV Park

This place just opened when we were here, so it was just a gravel lot -- covered with goat head thorns. My suggestion is if you have pets, you cant walk them here unless the thorns have been cleaned up. We were the only people here, so it was quiet, but it was just far enough outside of town to be a pain. Next time we'd look for another place.

This is a self-service park with few frills. When you arrive, you check yourself in (our rate was the weekly pull-through rate). The park owner is available by email and the few time I wrote to him with questions like where's the closest propane refill (it's West Texas Gas in Alpine on Highway 118 north of the hospital, by the way), he wrote back quickly and was very helpful.

There are a few retro trailers always on site to add some charm, and the visitors seem to have a higher retro camper ratio than usual, too. It seemed a lot of folks just stayed for one night, but several stayed for a week or longer (like us) to have time to explore Marfa and the surrounding areas. During the week, there were just a few other guests, but during the weekends, it livened up.

A few potential downsides: there's a train that runs right behind the park. It doesn't blow its horn at night like it does during the day, but you can definitely hear and feel the rumble. Also, there are provided shower and bathroom facilities, as well as a laundry facility and kitchen, but none have any kind of central air or heat. There is one washer and one dryer, but you pay with a cash envelope, so it's nice not to have to keep track of quarters.

We loved our brunch at Squeeze Marfa. There's supposed to be a great organic grocery store in Marfa, although we never made it there; the Puebla Market grocery store is pricey and a bit picked-over. There's a Dollar General next door for quick things.

There are plenty of businesses in Alpine, and the drive between the two cities is pretty. Also recommended is Big Bend National Park, although it's a long drive. It's best if you can stay the night there. McDonald Observatory is only 45-60 minutes north, so take advantage of an evening Star Party to look through their high-powered telescopes.

As some have described, this is a no-frills, self-serve RV park. I found it to be a little on the creepy side, not seeing anyone around most of the time.

Amenities: It's a new park so the shower, bathrooms, etc. are all nice enough. A bit dimly lit, but good shower pressure & heat in the one shower in the bathroom. Laundry is on your honor (cash envelope) and there is just one machine. No picnic table or anything like that. Sites are gravel and a little uneven. Wifi was actually decent, which was a very redeeming quality in the Marfa deadzone.

Location: The park is right on the train tracks, so you most definitely can hear the trains rolling through at night, and they are much louder during the day. The location is OK. Marfa is small, and Tumble In is right outside of the town limit, which is definitely not as convenient as it could be (you then have to drive to everything).

Overall, I'm not sure if I would camp here again. For what it is, this park seems to be overpriced (but most RV parks in Marfa are overpriced).

We ended up here after a reservation got messed up elsewhere. It's a self service RV park. You fill out a form in their office (which is just a small travel trailer next to the clubhouse) that lists the site number, how long you'll be there, and your method of payment. You drop it in the lock box in the office and you're checked in. As for amenities all sites are full hook up, there is decent Wi-Fi, laundry, and nice bathrooms/showers. AT&T and Verizon are very fast here (30mbps down, 10 up).

The best thing about this park is its proximity to Marfa. It's less than a mile to downtown, which we frequently biked or walked.

The only downside to this park is the trains. They can be kind of loud. Sleeping with ear plugs or white noise is probably a must unless you're a very heavy sleeper. Our air conditioner or white noise usually did the trick, but I still woke up occasionally.

Other reviewers mentioned stickers/burrs. I think they've cleaned all these up. Our dogs had no issues during the week we were there.

This place fit in nicely with the vibe in Marfa. There were several other vintage trailers there as well. The self check in was easy. We loved the bathrooms - cool but simple finish out. Best of all the wifi worked great as promised and we watched teevee while there! Not much privacy but we were happy to be surrounded by the wide open spaces.

This place was interesting in that it was trying to be trendy and I guess minimalist is trendy. The campgrounds were clean and the neighbors were quiet. The laundry is based on the honor system which can be good and bad. The bathroom facility was clean as was the kitchen area.
If bike riding is your thing then I would recommend bringing one to ride around town on. It's a short ride from the RV park and it's kind of fun to see the town on two wheels.
All in all, if we were to visit Marfa again we would stay here since it's the best option, for us anyway, in town.

On a whim, I decided to take a look at Marfa. Since it was February, there wasn't much going on. But, I did find some great pizza and some live music. The RV park is bare bones, but it was perfect for me. Easy to get in and set up. I will say the showers were not very warm. SInce it was 26 degrees the night before this was a bummer for me.

If we ever make our way back to Marfa, I guess we'd stay here again because options are limited.

Good water pressure and power
Usable WiFi
Good cellphone signal - Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile worked at the park. In town they didn't work as well. We went to dinner at Stellina and the cell signal gets worse in town, T-Mobile had no signal and AT&T was barely usable.

Cons:
Not a place for people with dogs that need walking and space to play some
Everything on the ground around the park has needles and the rocks are hard on paws
Stickers/burrs everywhere, make sure you check your shoes and paws before going into your RV
The entrance into the park is a rough drop off with some potholes between the road and gravel/dirt drive
The trains can be loud at night, sometimes blowing their horns at like 2am
We also saw a lot of people staying at the park speeding in and out of the park, there's no speed limit posted for the park
The self check-in (not sure if this is a total con, there is an onsite manager if there's issues, I guess)

The town of Marfa is nice. We ate at Marfa Burrito and Stellina, which were both good. Took a yoga class at The Well and it was great and relaxing.

After being in Big Bend National/State parks for the past week, we really needed a place with great internet and reliable phone to work. We tried the Marfa Lights free parking, but our tmobile hotspot was completely dead out there and ATT wasn't much better.

TumbleIn now has an on site host. Previous reviews mentioned that it was on the honor system? It's really clean here, the wifi signal was strong at site 5, bathrooms were totally fine, and we had full hookups. It's the first park in a while that we could actually thread a sewer cap into to make a tight connection.

Negatives? Seems just a little overpriced for desert camping and it's sandwiched between the train tracks and the highway. We had to pay for pullthrough spot since all the backins were taken. Backin pricing is completely reasonable BTW.

Still, glad we came here and we're happily working away on the campground wifi without even using our hotspot. We would def stay here again.

We spent one night here after a lovely drive down 17 from I-10 at Balmorhea, TX through Fort Davis. Level, gravel pull-thru camp site toward the front. Yes, we drove down to the Marfa Lights viewing station a few miles south of down on 90. We saw lights, but are not convinced they were not vehicle lights on highway 67. You go and be the judge. Ha We had a good Mexican dinner at Mando's in town on US-90 and stopped again for breakfast burritos on our way out the next morning. Pretty good!
