Situated at the base of Mount Morrison, the deep blue waters of Convict Lake invite you to enjoy a liesurely picnic or stroll along the lakeside trail. The epitome of peacefulness today, Convict Lake got its name from an incident that was nothing but peaceful. In 1871, six inmates from a Nevada prison escaped here, and eventually battled their way out with a shootout, ultimately giving Convict Lake its name. Today visitors escape to Convict Lake for fishing, horseback riding, hiking, camping and to enjoy fine dining at the Convict Lake Restaurant. Fishing derbies are held throughout the season at Convict Lake - try your luck at catching a monster trout from a boat, float tube or from the shore. Ride by horseback on a guided trail ride or poke around for 500-year old fossils in the metamorphic rock formations. Autumn is the perfect time to visit Convict Lake, with brilliant fall colors and excellent fishing.

Great 3 mile hike around an alpine lake. The lake had been featured in several movies and commercials. It is especially beautiful in the fall with spectacular color. Stop into the general store for fishing supplies and to rent a pontoon or canoe. If you're staying in Mammoth you must make the 10 minute drive.

Gorgeous spot.. one of my favorite places to visit in the fall. Boat rental and cabins are nearby and affordable.

Convict Lake Campground (7,500 feet) is a very popular campground located in a spectacular canyon and close to the lake. Convict Lake is a very popular fishing and hiking destination with many other outdoor recreational opportunities for the family including biking, rock climbing, winter sports and wildlife viewing. There is also a general store, boat / equipment rentals, bait shop and restaurant.
