Sycamore Canyon Campground

This was the first stop on my fiancé and my epic road trip to Seattle. We were there just after a storm in September when the whole campground was flooded. Luckily it reopened right before our trip. The fire pits and picnic benches were brand new, and the porta pottys were clean. Not much of a swimming beach, there was tons of rocks and the shore incline was steep.

We had originally planned on staying here on our way up the Pacific Coast Highway. Once we pulled in we were a bit taken back by the campground. It was more of just a parking lot that backed up to small wooded areas with your typical fire ring and picnic table (maybe not at all sites).
Once we realized that we were not going to be staying there we wanted to logon and check out some other campgrounds in the area, but our Verizon Mifi service was giving us zero bars so we knew for sure we couldn't stay there.
All in all, it really overpriced for what it is given no hook ups and the very strange set up.
Also, we found it to be called Point Mugu State Park when we were researching it.

This is a lovely campground offering some nice campsites and miles of hiking/biking trails. It was a surprise to find such a sanctuary amongst the urban sprawl that is Southern California...homes, asphalt and concrete. As it turns out, it is but a small part of Santa Monica Mountains National Preserve. Point Mugu features miles of rugged shoreline, narrow sandy beaches and some chaparral covered hills offering miles of hiking trails.

The campsites within the campground are small, more suited to tenters, truck campers and small trailers. Two sites adjacent to the camp host site offers a 40'' pad, but you are parked parallel to the camp, so little room to maneuver a large rig. As our rig is only 25' long, we were able to fit in the majority of the sites.

We felt the price point per night was steep, at $42.50 per night, based on shortcomings of amenities. You have to cross the highway to access the beach, there is only one restroom/shower building and the gate is locked each evening at 10:00 pm with no access out or in after that time.

Bathrooms are flush toilets, very clean and there are at least token eating showers. A well used trail at the rear of the park offers miles of hiking and mountain biking. Apparently it is quite popular as we witness many people parking in the day use and walk through the campground to access the trail. No dogs allowed though.

The sunset at the beach was awesome, but the campground itself is small and it is tight for even the smallest of trailers. This campground is better suited for tents. There are no hookups of any kind, but there are coin operated showers and the bathrooms are clean.

Many of the campsites are "duets", two parking spaces right next to one another, so if your neighbor is noisy there's no way around it. Beach access is shockingly difficult considering how close the beach is to the campground. Pedestrians need to shoot Pacific Coast Highway without the benefit of a crosswalk or signal to get there. Drove by Leo Carillo on the way to Sycamore Canyon, and sadly it appeared to be completely destroyed by the fires. If it ever re-opens, I prefer Leo Carrillo to Point Mugu.

It was very crowded and noisy and worse then that you have to share parking with the others . It was in very good location And very good hiking trail also close to the beach but you have to cross hwy 1 and there is no light or a stop sign . But this was my experience maybe you’re gonna have a different one better one or worst one . All together for $52 per night it’s not worth it .

Very near to the beach although dodging across PCH was not a very safe option so we drove across. Parking at the beach included with the campground fee. Also possible to scramble down an embankment and walk under the overpass if the tide is out. We could hear the waves at night which we enjoyed. The camp is clean and well managed. Bathrooms clean. Lots of bold squirrels and rabbits, some poison oak along the creek bank in the camp ground but seems to be maintained enough to avoid it. Tent spaces tucked back in from the parking area nicely. Our 21' trailer fit nicely into space 53, larger trailers than ours by far also camped in this loop. The spaces are paved and ours was very level. not particular private but not that bad either as the sites are wide. Potable water near us altho no threads so bring water jugs. Park was nice for families. we were there midweek and it was quiet enough. very foggy but to be expected this time of year on the coast. took about 15 minutes into Malibu for a grocery store. dogs allowed on the beach which was why we picked this spot. All the dogs had a great time too.

We had campsite 40 and it was just at the entrance. The area outside was sort of uncomfortable and not very pretty. Showers were token, 2 minutes for .50 cents however took a full two minutes to get to the top temp of almost lukewarm. That was disappointing. Overall was ok for a night or two. 20 minute drive to Malibu. There was zero service however Cali parks has free wifi, which was available about 100 yards down the road. Helpful for quick check ins.

What more to ask from a walk!? Point Mugu State Park is simply majestic. You can walk at the sea shore while admiring the hierarchy of the mountains at the background.

This beach somehow feels like an open shell, overprotected by the tall mountains surrounding it. While walking, you can feel the breeze of the sea blowing through your face.

The beach was not very crowded when we went but it got full of families later on. The shore was full of kids playing and dogs running all around!!
