For a short period of time in your life, you'll find Fourth Street Live fun. Just turned 21, don't mind paying covers, loud frat rap and obnoxious DJs are just part of the experience, etc. Then you turn 23 or 24 and you realize that hey, this isn't what a night out with a few friends has to be. If you're stuck in downtown, you probably won't be able to go anywhere else short of a cab ride to Bardstown Road. If you have the option though, I recommend skipping Fourth Street and going straight to Bardstown Road.
Agree with Brandon that Bardstown Road is way more fun, but if you're looking for a place to play 21 again (aka a bachelor party) this will do just fine. Like Josh said, the open container is nice. If you're tight on time and staying downtown, this place is a good option for eating & drinking. If you have more time, get out to Bardstown. (If you really want a classy drinking experience, go to Proof on Main.)
One of the coolest spots in any city I've seen. A single block that is loaded with restaurants and bars, blocked off by cops who check IDs at night. You can walk around without dealing with open container laws. I really enjoyed the sports bars we went to including The Tavern upstairs with loads of fun games. This should be replicated in all cities!
I definitely agree that Bardstown is better, but for a convenient place to get lunch if you're in the city, it's got a lot to offer!
