“Prime example of Googie architecture”
Johnie's Coffee Shop is a former coffee shop and well known example of Googie architecture located on the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue in Los Angeles, California. The restaurant is perhaps best known as the setting for the opening of the 1988 cult film Miracle Mile, in which a patron learns that a nuclear war is about to begin. The restaurant has also appeared in a 1999 Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers music video, "Swingin'", and a 2003 Reba McEntire music video, "Somebody", and is seen in several movies, including Volcano, starring Tommy Lee Jones,The Big Lebowski, starring Jeff Bridges and John Goodman, and American History X, starring Edward Norton. Johnie's is located across from the May Co. department store, one of Los Angeles' best examples of Streamline Modern architecture, on Los Angeles' Miracle Mile. The May Co. building is now part of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
I live one block from Johnie's Coffee Shop also known as Bernie's Coffee Shop. It claims to be a political headquarter for progressive campaigns but I walk by every day and all I see is an empty building with trash and homeless people living in tents around it. That vacant building stinks of human urine and feces. It could provide shelter for the homeless instead of just being an empty building. Or perhaps the absentee landlord could sell the building to a business that will actually provide value to the community and have an incentive to keep the area clean and safe?
