“Visit the ancient world of Gree & Rome”

The Getty Villa in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, USA, is one of two locations of the J. Paul Getty Museum. The Getty Villa is an educational center and museum dedicated to the study of the arts and cultures of ancient Greece,Rome, and Etruria. The collection has 44,000 Greek, Roman, and Etruscan antiquities dating from 6,500 BC to 400 AD, including the Lansdowne Heracles and the Victorious Youth. The UCLA/Getty Master’s Program in Archaeological and Ethnographic Conservation is housed on this campus. The collection is documented and presented through the online GettyGuide as well as through audio tours.

The Getty Villa is free however it does require advance reservations. The grounds are beautiful and the architecture is amazing. Unfortunately due to the draught all of the water features were turned off which took away from the overall effect. This truly feels like you are miles away from L.A., tranquil and peaceful. Having said that, this museum houses Greek and Roman antiquities only. There are sculptures, pottery, coins, etc. If you are looking for a wider variety of artwork, visit the Getty Center. We visited both in the same day as they were offering free parking for your second visit. My entire family agreed that while the Getty Villa was gorgeous, the Getty Center was far more impressive. If you only have time to visit one or the other, you will get more variety at the Getty Center.

Loved this place and great for the children. The villa is beautiful. The girls did the 'art detective' story, the kids room was filled with art to try out and rubbings to make, and the free audio tour was excellent.

I wasn't sure if I was in Southern California or Italy. For rght off the PCH, it's eerily quiet, but it's a perfect afternoon trip to escape traditional feel of LA. The architecture and central gardens bring you to Europe without actually getting on a plane.
They have recently shut off their fountains and drained their pools due to the drought, but it hardly takes away from the experience.
