“Come catch a Surface Tour!”
We invite you to visit our exhibit hall, where you’ll find exciting information about Sanford Underground Research Facility (Sanford Lab), the city of Lead, and the history of Homestake. Our exhibits include historic photographs, videos, science and mining artifacts, and a 3-D model of the underground—from the surface down to the 8,000-foot level! From our deck, view the 1,000-foot-deep Open Cut, an iconic landmark in the Black Hills, and see the many varieties of rock that created this unique landscape. Admission is free.
The new Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center is a real gem! Not only do you get an awesome view point on the open cut from the old gold mine, but there is also so many interactive displays and in depth information about both the history of the mine and the science laboratories that now uses it! The visit to the Visitor Center is free and is totally worth a stop, and the minimal fee for the surface tour is also a good investment of your time and bucks!
