“home to bald eagles, tortoises & more”

Colt Creek State Park was purchased from the Overstreet Family in May of 2006. This 5,067 acre park nestled within the Green Swamp Wilderness Area and named after one of the tributaries that flows through the property was opened to the public on January 20, 2007. For over 60 years this property was managed as a cattle ranch by the Overstreets. Past activities on the land included beef cattle production, lime rock mining, timber harvesting and turpentining. Comprised mainly of pine flatwoods, cypress domes and open pasture land, this piece of natural Florida wilderness is home to many animal species including the American bald eagle, sherman's fox squirrel, gopher tortoise, white-tailed deer, wild turkey and bobcat. Colt Creek State park offers numerous recreational opportunities including hiking, horseback riding (with your own horse), biking, picnicking and nature study. Two picnic areas with a total of four pavilions, two restrooms and a fishing/observation dock are available. Three of the pavilions are available for rental. Freshwater Fishing is also a popular activity. Visitors can fish either from the bank or a small boat such as a canoe, kayak or Jon boat. Gas powered motors are not permitted however electric trolling motors are. For overnight enthusiasts, both a primitive backpack camp and a primitive youth camp are available.

New 2 week old RV campground with large back in and a few pull thru sites on gravel but level sites. Each site provides ample room ( 68 ft deep) for large rigs. Water & electricity. 2 handicap sites (site 2 & 6 ) are on full cement slabs with full hookups. Clean restrooms. Two long hiking trails ( a 10 and 7 mile loop ). Lake with kayak rentals. Future sites to come when more funding is provided which leaves me to the only downfall- partially completed roads. Drive into your site is dirt. You will leave here covered in dust. It’s a great new park close to a Publix market within 15 mins. Plenty of privacy between neighbors. All sites have fire pits and barbecue grills. Washer & dryer soon to come.

This is a new campground and a relatively new State Park. Our check in went smoothly, even though the staff is still getting used to the system and our site had been reserved the day before, but the person never checked in/out. Caused a little confusion, but they figured it out and we made our way to our site. The drive to the campground is a bit long, but is mostly paved, only the very last bit is hard packed dirt. The campground road is not paved, but the sites are all gravel with a patio area to the side that has a picnic table, fire pit and charcoal grill.

We had no trouble backing into our site and more than enough room for our 39’ fifth wheel and truck. Our site was level and we had no problems with the hookups. Not all sites are as spacious, but in general the sites are roomy. There is ample space between sites, you don’t feel crowded at all, but the lack of trees makes for little to no privacy or shade. There are a couple of pull throughs on the inside of the loop that would feel more private, the one our friend was in on the outside of the loop had the living area facing the road.

We didn’t use the bath house, but our friend did and said they were spotless, which I would expect considering how new everything is.

The park itself is large with a lot of hiking opportunities, equestrian trails and a lake for kayaking or fishing. We really appreciated how quiet it was at night and I’ve heard the star gazing is nice, but we had cloudy weather our two nights there.

My only real complaint was the dust, we were near the main road and people don’t seem to obey the speed limit, even some people driving in the campground loop went a little too fast. We didn’t have much trouble since our RV blocked the dust from the main road and our living space was removed from the campground road, but our RV was quite dusty when we left. I’ve been told that paving the road and campground loop are in the plans, but I also know that Florida state parks are still recovering from hurricane damage, so it might be a while for them to get the money. The dust certainly wouldn’t keep me from returning, the good far outweighs the dust!

While we were there the campground host drove around offering firewood and ice, which was nice, we didn’t have to drive up to the gate for our wood.

Our AT&T phones would work outside, but not very well in the RV. We used our Verizon Mifi, with a booster, and that worked just fine.

We really enjoyed our stay and are looking forward to returning.

I can see why it is difficult to get reservations here. This campground is local to me, less than 45 minutes away, so I have to wonder if a lot of other locals are making use of this place!
A lot of reviews I've seen complain about the dirt road & how dusty it gets...the speed limit is 15 mph & yes, it kicks up some dust. Solution? Go 10 mph & there's even less! You're supposed to be relaxing anyway, so why drive fast?
The ranger station is not far off SR 471, but the campground itself is about 2 miles further in. The road is paved until right before you get to the camping area, so it's a nice, easy drive in. The entrance to the camping area is where you'll find the dump station. There are two lanes, so there's that convenience, but the placement makes for a confusing drive in. I guess the best thing to do is stay to the right, whether you're coming or going. No one was using the staitons when I checked in or out, so I can't say if campers will block the entrance/exit or not.
Another complaint is that there's not much privacy between sites, but it really depends on the site you pick. It is a very young campground (about 8 yrs?), so the trees & brush are still re-growing. The sites are well-spaced, very clean and level. There were a couple of areas holding water at the campground, but I can't say if they were retention ponds or just standing water from the recent rains we had, but I'm leaning toward retention. Not a big deal this time of year, but in the summer I can see it breeding mosquitoes by the thousands. From what I could see, all RV sites have both a fire ring and a grill, along with a picnic table. Not sure what the primitive sites have, but they did look pretty spacious, with rock for ground cover. There are some near some of the RV sites. There is also a few parking areas within the campground area for extra vehicles to park, as well as for tent-camper parking.
The bath-house was very clean and fairly large at the campground; the one closer to the entrance (near the kayak rental & dock) was very nice as well. I don't judge restrooms on whether they are 'dated' - it's a bathroom - as long as it's clean & works as it should, I'm a happy camper!
I only had time for one trail (Mac Lake) and it was a fairly nice little walk. I think it is just under a mile, but can't remember for sure. It was shaded and twisty. Lots of above-ground roots--not saying this to be ridiculous (it's the woods, after all), but I can be accident prone, so I have to be very aware. Just sharing the knowledge for any other 'klutzes' that like to hike as much as I do! Along the way, on the paved trail by the lake, I noticed there are LOTS of active fire ant hills and they were mostly right at the edge of the paved area on the grass. I did notice that there were some that appeared to have been treated and were no longer active, so they are doing something about them, but the active ones were numerous--kids & dogs beware! The paved trail near the lake eventually ends, but you can walk further down a dirt access road. Not sure where it leads because it got too hot to continue; this area has no shade (Cypress Swamp area). I did see others out walking around the lake, on the other side, but again, it was too hot for me to be without shaded trails.
The dock & kayak area was very nice; I did not check out the kayaks this time, but may on my next trip there. The lake area was very clean, as was the rest of the park. I think it may be the cleanest I have been to.
When all is said and done, I will definitely be camping here more often and checking it out further. Reasonably priced, nice and quiet, great location--perfect for that much-needed time to de-stress and start the new year off right!

Absolutely loved camping at this state park. So clean and well cared-for. Spacious lots with good distance between each one. Beautiful backdrop with tall pine trees and Florida scrub (kept under control with prescribed burns) that comes alive at night with the sound of crickets, Chuck-will’s-widows, and owls hooting to each other from the treetops. Nice, packed gravel surfaces in level sites throughout the campground. Super-clean and well-organized side-by-side dump stations at the exit. Lots of beautiful roads to ride your bikes on and extensive, wide, grassy equestrian trails that are gorgeous and shaded for hiking. Nice lake to canoe or kayak; would’ve brought my paddleboard but it is Florida gator nesting season and I figured I would not tempt them. I was at site number 22 and the only negative was that my awning side faces south, so I had direct sun for most of the heated part of the day. Would recommend getting a site with a different angle so that you can get some relief from the warm Florida sun. I work remotely, and I was able to get at least two bars on Verizon the whole time and to use my cell phone as a hotspot.

Though we live only a short trip from here, it is one of our favorite places to come for a weekend get-away. The park is aa very new park and the campground is even newer. I believe the campground was developed a little less than 2 years ago. All of the spots are gravel (except the 2 ADA spots which are concrete) and very level. There is plenty of room between spots though there are not a lot of mature trees to shade the sites. Each site has a picnic table, fire ring and grill. The bath house was very clean and in good repair. I would highly recommend this campground. My next step will be to take a hike on some of the almost 20 miles of well maintained trails throughout the grounds. There is also a lake and canoe rentals.

We checked this out while camping at Hillsborough River State Park took our bikes to ride the extensive trails offered. This is a brand new State Park and appears to be former cattle ranch land. The campground for RV’s would only be doable in Florida’s very brief winter. None of the sites offer any shade so if sitting in your RV the whole time with the AC is your idea of getting away from it all maybe this one is for you. The hiking biking trail went through some beautiful cypress and oak canopy but much of the seven miles we biked was in the full June sun making us long for our camper and AC back at Hillsborough River State Park.

We purchased our camper on 7/6/2020 and took our maiden voyage the same day! We chose Colt Creek because of the nice, level, spacious sites. We had driven through a few weeks ago choosing our favorite sites and decided on #24 because it is a pull-through and we’re newbie RV-ers! Set up was a breeze. The sites are beautifully created and clean. Grill, fire-pit, picnic table, H2O and electric hookups are on each site. The restrooms are spotless. The park is so peaceful and has many trails to explore! We enjoyed our stay very much and will definitely be back again!

Huge level sites, 50 amp, two dump stations, good washer and dryer. Plenty of hiking and biking opportunities in the park. More of a weekend destination place rather than a base for sightseeing as there is nothing around to see. 15 miles to nearest grocery. An hour to Tampa. Plenty of OTA channels.

We stayed at Colt Creek for 1 night - mostly to be closer to our next campground. We were lucky to get site 31 which had more privacy and space than some of the other sites. Lots of ground cover between this site and the sites around us. Pad was very level and there were some nice looking trails we would have tried if we were there longer. Only negative was horrible cell service - which normally would be a plus, but we were working remotely on this trip. Very spotty Verizon service which made our hotspot useless for the night.
