“Site of '32 and '80 Winter Olympics”
Some of the most memorable moments in winter sports happened here at the Olympic Center. In the heart of Lake Placid, this is where miracles are made. It was at the Olympic Center, in 1980, that the U.S. Men's Hockey Team toppled the Soviet Union on its way to winning the gold medal. This is where 16-year-old figure skater Sonja Henie won a gold medal in 1932 and charmed the world and where, half a century later, speedskater Eric Heiden made history by winning gold five times in 1980. But the glory isn't all behind us. Every year the 7,700-seat 1980 Rink Herb Brooks Arena (named after the Miracle on Ice coach) hosts national and international figure skating competitions, USA Hockey events, Smucker's Stars on Ice and other special events. During the summer months we host Saturday Night Ice Shows and open the indoor rinks for public skating. National and international level skaters such as Johnny Weir and Rachael Flatt are regulars and you never know when a legend like Scott Hamilton or Jim Craig might pop in for a day. We have a total of three ice surfaces for public skating and athlete training, host one of the longest-running summer figure skating programs in the world and can accommodate your needs for conventions and large conferences. The Lake Placid Olympic Museum is located on the first floor of the building, just a few dozen feet from the miraculous rink. Here the keeper of dreams preserves our proud Olympic heritage and, with new exhibits all the time, keeps the legacy alive. All of it is open to you. Take a break from summer's heat and come in for a skate or a guided tour of the Olympic Center. Walk through the Arena during a tournament and hear cheers powering a team to victory, just as the crowd's chants coaxed a miracle out of the U.S. team years ago. This is the Olympic Center. This is the heart of Lake Placid.
