“Homemade treats, eats and sweets”
It all started almost 15 years ago when Brent and Christina Mattheessen started a small coffee cart business in the Clinton Square Market in Key West, Florida. Long before it became popular, the Mattheessens were grinding coffee beans fresh for each customer right from their cart. That’s where the Mattheessen’s philosophy of offering the freshest, highest quality products made in “Small Batches” was born. As the demand for their coffee grew, the Mattheessens decided to trade in their homemade coffee cart and open a storefront bakery featuring not only coffee but an assortment of homemade ice cream, cookies, fudge, and freshly baked homemade sweets. Although big batch recipes allowed for less baking per week, just as with grinding their coffee beans for each order, the Mattheessens insisted on preparing their ice cream and baked goods in smaller batches using only the finest, all natural ingredients. Before long, the enticing warm aroma of fresh baked cookies and coffee brewing beckoned anyone who passed by to enter their bakery. The word spread quickly about the Mattheessen’s fresh tasting goodies; soon locals and tourists alike began stopping by to sample the homemade tastes. With the increasing business, the Mattheessens were able to open a second shop on Duval Street and then a third on White Street. The third location, Mattheessen’s 4th of July Ice Cream Parlor, is located in the restored historic building that housed the 4th of July Cuban restaurant from the late 50’s. In addition to their dessert items, the 4th of July serves a mix of All-American favorites such as hamburgers and old-time BBQ with a Key West flair. Even though the business has grown to three stores and the Mattheessens to a family of five, Brent and Christina still offer the same fresh to order quality goodness as they did when they had one small pushcart. And as always, their specialty fudge, ice cream, and cookies are made fresh daily to ensure the highest quality. Stop by and you’ll see why the motto is “It’s all about the goodness!”
