Juntura usually slides below the radar of hot spring hunters. This is a nice one. It's usually during hunting season when Juntura Hot Springs sees most of its visits, by hunters. A few freelance Bureau of Land Management camping spots, useable for RVs and trailers, invite pulling up and staying a few days. Fall is a good time to visit, because it's a hot, desolate place in summer.
The hot springs is a mile walk from a parking area along the river. It's easy to find because there's a big orange arrow on one of the rocks pointing the way. Just follow the river downstream on an old BLM road and look for an island in the river, where it makes a big oxbow to the southeast.
The channel of the Malheur River that you need to walk across to reach the island barely has any water this time of year, so it's easy to skip across on rocks. That may not be the case in spring. The soaking pool, filled with 102-degree water, could hold a crowd of 30
This was hard to get to with kids. The River to cross over to the hot springs was rushing and I couldn’t tell how deep it was so I wasn’t going to take my kids into it in case we slipped and fell and got sucked down the River! I didn’t even know that you had to cross a River to get to it but you walk about a half mile from where you park and then cross the river to get to it. Unfortunately we didn’t even get to see it because you can’t see it from across the river. I only assumed where it was.
