“Michigan's most haunted jail”
Michigan State Prison was built in 1842 and was the state's first prison, and for a time the world's largest walled prison, with over 6000 inmates. According to countless first-hand witnesses, many of those restless spirits are still trapped inside, unwilling to move on. The prison became well known for its riots, and escapes with countless deaths and rumors of inmate torture In 1975, inmate Dale Remling attempted a daring escape after his partner hijacked a helicopter and landed it in the prison yard. The group made it six-miles from the facility to their getaway cars, but police managed capture them only a few miles down the road, putting an end to their short escape. On more than one occasion the prison was overtaken by mobs of inmates, the most the most intense mutiny lasting 5 days and causing over $2.5 million in damage. Stories of the inmates' sickness, torture, and neglect spread, and in 2006 after the death of mentally ill inmate Timothy Joe Sounders, many of the prison's inhumane methods ended. Sounders had been lying naked in a cell, covered his own urine, in 100 degree temperatures for days. His was just one of the hundreds of deaths that occurred behind the walls of the prison. Many people who have spent time in the prison have reported seeing doors opening and closing, pipes banging, phantom screams, and well over 50 separate full-blown apparitions have been reported. Disembodied voices are often captured on tape, sometimes screaming and other times begging for help. Many times people have even reported being pushed and touched. Considering the amount of violence the building saw during its days as prison it’s no surprise that many claim to have had first hand experiences with the spirits there are still trapped behind the bars. - Roadtrippers Visit their website for hours and tour information: https://www.historicprisontours.com/?page_id=222
