“An abandoned spacecraft”
If visitors from another planet were to land in America, you'd never guess that it would be in the small town of Italy, Texas, but just by the I-35 off-ramp sits a decaying spaceship just waiting for launch. The Starship Pegasus, a quirky architectural lark with clear nods to the Starship Enterprise, was built as a restaurant and arcade in 2005, complete with plans for a hotel and entertainment center. Unfortunately, it never quite took off, and for several years it's been more of an offbeat landmark for roadtrippers to swing by and take pictures with. In 2010, the owner of the Pegasus, Andy Gee, tried to breathe new life into the craft by reopening it and turning it into a hub for local music and vendors. A bustling space-port, for weary intergalactic travelers, if you will. “We are looking for many different kinds of vendors and flea market booths. We are also looking for musicians. We are creating a destination experience." Alas, the martian flea market wasn't meant to be, and the ship has, once again, found itself for sale by the side of the highway. A recent visit by Odd Things I've Seen's J.W. Ocker says it best: "Today, it looks less like a parked space ship than it does a crash-landed one. Peeking through the scrims that covered the glass doors, I only saw vacant space, although a large, UFO-shaped lighting fixture was still attached to the interior of the dome. I guess I expected to see the dusty bones of its crew inside." Gee says that he still has plans for the decaying starship, but until then, you'll just have to be content with doing your best James T. Kirk pose by the empty hull. Have you visited the Starship Pegasus? What do you think they should turn the building into? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below.
It’s gone! I should have double checked, but Roadtrippers should check these things!
Fun photo op. Not to exciting though.
