“Relax in a Remote Mountain Setting!”

Welcome to Brighton State Park. The outstanding attraction of this area is its remoteness: mountains with tree-covered slopes, fast running streams, and clear lakes. The wild lands to the northeast and southeast of the town of Island Pond are suited to the angler, the hunter, or the outdoor lover who likes to roam away from developed roads or towns. Logging roads into the deeper reaches of this area offer adventurous side trips. Island Pond enjoyed a heyday from the late 1800's until the Depression years, along with the fortunes of the Grand Trunk railroad between  Montreal, Canada and Portland, Maine. Island Pond was the site of the first international railroad junction in the United States. At the height of the town’s population, its streets were lively with railroad men and loggers, most of whom rode in on one of the 13 rail tracks that passed through town. A mere two tracks remain today. The unique wooden bridge, which once held all 13 tracks, is gone, but the heritage of railroading is still evident in the well-kept train station and a few associated structures at the north end of town. Brighton State Park is located on the shores of Spectacle Pond.  A sandy day use beach and bathhouse is located on Island Pond just a half mile from the campground. The campground sits on the mostly undeveloped Spectacle Pond where it is common to hear loons calling at night. There are 5 cabins, 61 tent/trailer sites and 23 leantos. All three restrooms include hot showers ($). A sanitary dump station is available, but no hookups. There are hiking trails, a camper's beach with boat rentals, nature museum, an amphitheater, a garage theater, and play area. At the nearby day use area there is a long sandy beach, (at the southern end of Island Pond), a bathhouse with restrooms, and rental boats.

This is an immaculately clean well kept campground. The sites are large and most of them have panoramic lake views with water access for kayaking, large picnic tables, and a fire ring with grill. The bathrooms are tiled with inlaid stonework and frankly the nicest cleanest experience I have ever had in a campground. There is a separate beach for campers and it was sandy and pleasant.

My favorite was the loon family that we could watch from our campsite.

Our check in was easy, the ranger friendly and helpful, and the site was freshly cleaned.

The vibe was quiet and respectful, with lots of nice families out enjoying the incredible beauty of the area. There were also very large nice lean to sites as well as cabins, and I would have been happy staying in any of them. We will return!

We stayed at site 49, which is a private site on a small peninsula into the lake, water on 3 sides. Sites were very clean, and sunny enough to charge our solar panels. We will definitely be back to this park.

Loop 1, site 25. This is a beautiful site on the pond with direct, private access to the water, and water views through some trees. Levelness of site rates 3/5. No hookups, but water available and there is a dump site. Site is sand, and loop road is not paved. Not a problem unless there is a lot of rain. This back-in site allowed us to keep our truck hooked up, which we appreciated for a one night stay. All in all a gorgeous park. Very quiet too.

Sites are spacious and well spaced out offering plenty of privacy. Bathrooms were clean. Walking trails around the lake right from the campground made for a convenient early morning bit of exercise. Cell reception on AT&T was sufficient.

Serene, beautiful camping with regular loon sightings. Campground and bath houses were clean and well maintained. Staff were friendly and very helpful. Nice trails available for dog walking. A lovely jumping off point for exploring the North Woods!

A lovely state park. Nicely wooded campsites and lean-tos. No hook ups which keeps it quieter. Wood and ice offered for sale at entry. Horseshoes and Volleyball. Bathrooms and hot shower ($.50 for 5-7 min). Waterfront sites with access. Nice quiet pond with small beach. Small but lovely hiking/walking trails - interpretive. Sites are well cleaned and groomed! Grocery Market about 2 miles in town.
