“110,000 Japanese-Americans held here”
In 1942, the United States government ordered more than 110,000 men, women, and children to leave their homes and detained them in remote, military-style camps. Manzanar War Relocation Center was one of ten camps where Japanese American citizens and resident Japanese aliens were interned during World War II. Today you may visit Manzanar and learn about the experience of the Japanese Americans at Manzanar and other eras of the site's history. You may drive a 3.2 mile auto tour and see remnants of orchards, rock gardens, building foundations, and the camp cemetery. Also, please plan to come inside the state-of-the-art Manzanar Interpretive Center where you will find extensive exhibits, a 22 minute film, and a bookstore.
The site is actually located 5 miles the other side of independence.
Despite growing up in the California educational system, this wasn’t something we covered in school. It should have been. It’s a lesson from history we all need to remember.
Place is very cool. This waypoint in Roadtrippers is not accurate however.
Few buildings remain as they were during the 1940's. Very interesting to see how Japanese Americans were forced to live in this temporary community. Though the scenery is majestic, you can only imagine the cold Sierra winters!

Very touching exhibit to remember our country's history. Worth the stop. Wasn't too busy when I went in November. Was there about an hour.
So interesting to see this site which was such a difficult time in our history. Loved the auto tour as well as the visitors center. The visitors centers does close at 5:30 so get there in time to get into the building and see the film.
