“Why did the bridge cross the river?”
The Historic National Road follows Old Hwy. 40 across the state. As it goes through Greenup, the road crosses the Embarras River. In 2000, the one-lane bridge was rebuilt to look old, but don't be fooled - it has no weight restrictions and can handle a fully loaded semi!
Very impressive construction
Beautiful re-created covered bridge!! Worth the stop along historic US-RTE 40 in Greenup, IL.

The old Rt. 40 Covered Bridge west of Greenup, Illinois. Abe Lincoln & his father Thomas Lincoln
Helped lay timbers for the original bridge in the 1800's
Who can resist a covered bridge? What a nice one this is. We stopped for a photo. The bridge still smells like old barn wood. It's clean and over a nice creek. Great place for senior pictures too.
