“see where pioneers traveling the Oregon Trail enjoyed one last look at the river”
Historic Farewell Bend State Recreation Area, located on the Oregon/Idaho border north west of Ontario, offers a beautiful desert experience on the banks of the Snake River's Brownlee Reservoir. Pioneers traveling on the historic Oregon Trail once rested and enjoyed one last look at the river. Historic markers and interpretive displays provide visitors with information on Farewell Bend's significance on the Oregon Trail. The RV and tent campgrounds make excellent base camps as you explore the region. Oregon Trail wagon ruts are visible just up the road. Firewood and ice are available for sale. If history isn't your game, come for the sports! Brownlee Reservoir offers fishing, water skiing and boating. There are horseshoe pits, basketball hoops and a sand volleyball court for you to enjoy. Best of all, while resting from the day's activities, you can enjoy the scenery and amenities. Picnic on the cool grass, roast marshmallows over your campfire. If you are lucky, you'll see wildlife like deer, pronghorn, geese, eagles, chukars, and Hungarian partridge. Evening interpretive programs are presented from Memorial Day through Labor Day. See events for dates and times. Parking permits are needed all year to use the park's large, shaded day-use area and boat ramp. Display a daily permit, a 12 or 24 month pass, or your camping receipt. A camping receipt is equal to a daily permit for those days registered if displayed on the driver's side of your vehicle's dashboard. Purchase a daily permit at the registration booth or at a day-use fee station.

The site has showers, clean bathrooms, fire pits, and water, and is close to the highway but far enough you can't hear it. Our only real mishap was that the prices online didn't match the price when we got there, but it wasn't a huge enough difference for it to matter.
Traveling in from Seattle and this was a great place to stop stretch and relax on the way to Boise or Yellowstone. Well maintained, clean facilities, nice lake and view!
This is a nice campground with a few spots on the Snake River. Our site, 108, bordered the river but you couldn't really access it directly from the site. Privacy was ok, not great, and our site had no shade, which was great for the solar panels, but not so great for escaping the afternoon heat. We had to pick up our site a bit (trash left by previous occupant), and the campground was quite loud with radios and kids being generally out of control, but that's not the campground's fault. We appreciated that it was close to the highway and was easy to get to for a quick stop en route.

Interesting that we had the same site as the previous reviewer and yet a very different experience. The site is up on a bluff a bit, but you can get down to the trail and to the water without too much trouble. You're definitely not on a beach, though.
True, there's no shade. If you want shade it would be best to get a site in the Brownlee Loop (#43-83) rather than the Catfish Loop (#84-122). #108 has a wide open expansive view of the river/reservoir, so you just need to decide what you want most. Everything was clean and everyone settled down and was quiet after 10ish.
We loved that there is a dog exercise area where the dogs can run free, and the trails allow dogs on leashes. Our pups were very happy. We geocached in the area, and found the Oregon Trail ruts and another beautiful area along the Snake River (Spring Recreation Area) where there is also apparently camping, including some boondocking opportunities.
It was VERY windy, so we did not even try sailing. But on the 3rd of July we were able to have the windows open with a brisk breeze. No awning, though. We were afraid it would be damaged by all the wind.

Stayed here over 4th of July weekend. It was quite warm at 90+ degrees. Stayed in C loop which seems like overflow, but still alright. Shade is definitely better in B loop, but the roads seem to be tighter too. Campground is right on Snake River with beautiful views. Lots of boaters camping there.
Closest town is Huntington OR which is very small. Only a little convenience store for supplies. But they had a cute 4th of July parade in town and fireworks right from the campground.
The sites don't have a sewer so you have to use the dump station at the entrance to the park. Not a big deal except it was dirty the morning we left and stunk. That part was not a pleasant experience.

It's true, there is nothing around this campground however it was a pleasant stay. You have a choice of staying in the I interior loop where they have planted bushes that afford more privacy or elect the upper more open loop with beautiful views of the Snake River. All in all an enjoyable experience!

We came here after several weeks of busy exploring in Washington and Oregon. There is nothing to do in this area, but that is just what we needed... a week of downtime. There are not many stores or anything nearby so stock up before you come. The campsites in the C loop are large with generous spacing between sites. The Snake River was behind our site and we had a beautiful view. When we first pulled into our site my phone showed no Verizon at all so I was afraid we wouldn't be able to stay since we work remotely and rely on cell coverage. We put up the booster and got 4G that worked surprisingly well for the entire week. Phone was a little weak but still usable with one 1 or 2 dropped calls during the week. AT&T did not work at all even with the booster. The campground was very quiet and peaceful when we were there in late September.

We stayed one night on September 21st but would've stayed longer had we not been on such a tight schedule. Our site was out close to the Snake River; actually the first site to the right as you descend to the "outer" loop. (In front of recycle bins) True....hardly any trees and, true....windy. But also true....we had NO neighbors. The road down to the loop was on one side but far enough away that it played no role in disturbing our privacy. The other side of our site was all brush and small trees. There was a walking path down to the river next to our site and our little trailer blocked the wind. We liked Huntington because it was a tiny quirky village. Exactly what we wanted! Peace and quiet.

As hard as they tried, it seemed park staff could not keep enough water on the campground grass to keep it green. It was 100+ both nights we were there. Our RV A/C never turned off! The water level was so low, the river didn’t even look inviting. The only folks we ever saw were park staff and the poor soles that were tent camping. RVers were all inside with AC.
We’d consider staying here again... at a cooler time... for one night while passing through.
No AT&T service.
We saw snakes, lizards, squirrels, rabbits, frogs, an owl, and lots of geese out on the water.
