“A final destination for circus performers”
Hugo, also known as "Circus City, USA" is the winter headquarters for two circuses: Kelly-Miller and Carson and Barnes. Dearly departed performers are laid to rest in Mt. Olivet Cemetery's designated Showmen's Rest, an area marked by elephant-topped posts and a stone engraved as "A Tribute To All Showmen Under God's Big Top."
I wouldn't go too far out of the way but it was interesting and worth going to if you are in the area. It is a relatively small area of a larger cemetery but the carvings and sayings on the stones told more about the lives of those who were there than most cemeteries and their lives were certainly different from most peoples.
Great stop-off, worth a minor detour. Truly unique memorials to entertainers--mostly circus performers but also three world champion bull riders.
I love visiting cemeteries and this one was well kept and beautiful!
