“a flagship nature center”
The Hitchcock Nature Center exists to develop and foster appreciation and understanding of the Loess Hills as a globally significant landform through land management, environmental education and low-impact recreation. Acquired by Pottawattamie County in 1991, Hitchcock Nature Center (HNC) currently consists of 1274 acres located in the heart of the globally significant Loess Hills. The Loess Hills harbor some of the largest remaining prairie remnants in Iowa and provide refuge for plants and animals found nowhere else in the state. Hitchcock is open every day of the year for hiking, camping, picnicking, bird watching, snow sledding, star gazing, or simply enjoying nature.

Confirmed by 2 users | Last reported on September 05, 2021Hitchcock nature center is a must stop if you're in the area. The park is easy to find with good signs. There is rv camping and tent camp available. The prices are very inexpensive and a day pass is only two dollars if you just want to stop by and have a picnic. The area is gorgeous and there are lots of hiking trails. The trails are well marked. There is a map at the trailhead and markers at each trail intersection that show the distance and difficulty of that stretch of trail as well as the direction of important areas like the lodge and campground. The trails are wide and well maintained. There is even a short wheelchair accessible trail. I went when it wasn't busy but the WiFi was surprisingly very good. I was able to stream a show on my tablet. The only minus to my stay was that the showers were not the cleanest, but they were hot!
We were traveling through and only spent one night. It’s a nice place to camp, and really quiet! Bathhouse was nice, seemed fairly new. We would stay there again.

Beautiful but Difficult... nice little County Park but I would not bring a big rig in again. First come first served and we got the only spot available that I could back the rig in to. Great locaton to explore Omaha and Council Bluffs.

Nice little campground for a quick overnight stop. Only a handful of sites to choose from but all had electricity and shared water. Didn’t use bathrooms but they looked clean. No ranger on site the day we arrived but left cash in the dropbox. Easy back-in site with our 33’ travel trailer. Nearby there’s a great observation tower and Nature Center for kids. Quick 20 min drive to Omaha. Nice spot!

When we arrived there were only three or four sites available. We first attempted a site in the first section, just not much room for maneuvering. We went to the second second and found a spot. It was very quiet, but it did rain most of the night. The bath house is adequate and the vault toilet across from our site was clean, nothing fancy. Word of caution. If you are coming from the south you will be directed through 15 miles of gravel roads. When we left we exited to I-29, north of Council Bluffs and had no gravel roads and only had to travel about five miles. The gravel road was around 15 miles from the freeway. If I stay there again I will enter from north of Council Bluff to avoid the bumpy roads. It was a very quiet evening. I can see where some found it to be noisy. The sites are very close. Great overnight-travel stay. By the way, first-come-first-served. No reservations

Pay attention to the signs at the entrance. Go to the campground not the nature center. Tight but manageable back-in spots. We have a 30ft 5th wheel. Clean. Nice trails and the nature center overlook tower affords great view of the area. Recommend and would come again. 1st come first serve. No reservations and only 18 sites.

Stayed here last august in my Aliner, I have a membership, so I had two nights free. It's just a nice place to camp. There are a couple of good places to eat in Crescent, just down the road a couple of miles. Henry's diner is always tasty.
The only issue I have with this place is that it's always full of transient workers, very few people camping recreational only. Kind of gives it a different vibe. It's still a quiet place, though. First-come, first serve, so you need to call ahead.

This is a beautiful park with lots of hiking trails and lots of hills. $25/night, worth it. Busy on the weekends but not during the week. Friendly Park Officers who are always willing to help. Electric at all sites, water at most sites. Close enough to Council Bluffs and Omaha for anything you need. 1 bar Verizon in the lower sites but Starlink was getting 100+ mbs with a clear view of the sky. We did hear a train close by but the cows on the other side of the fence were louder. I would definitely recommend to anyone coming to the area.

We stayed here for one night on our way back home to Texas from Alaska. This park is a hidden gem. There are so many hiking trails that it would take 3-4 days to get them all in. Several easy, moderate and difficult hikes. Lush and green and not too many mosquitoes considering the time of year. We stayed on the top of the hill near the entrance in site 8. It was perfectly level. This was a first for us on this trip. The WiFi is free, it is not password protected. We were able to stream a baseball game without any buffering. Very unusual for campground WiFi. We had 30 Amp electric and water at the site. The dump is close. We will defiantly return when we come back this way.

After attempting to call the camp host and not receiving an answer, we drove our 40'er + towed up here to see if there were any sites available over Easter weekend.
There were not any spots open.
The park appeared decently maintained, with lots of kids wandering around. Sites appeared level, and most appeared capable of handling a 40' rig.
