“once a stop along the historic California Trail”
Red Rock Canyon State Park, located in west central Oklahoma near Hinton, is an outdoor adventurer's dream. With the backdrop of red canyon walls, visitors are invited to reconnect with the natural world while exploring the park's trails. Take a serene walk on one of the park's two nature trails, or enjoy a more strenuous hike through the rocky terrain on a hiking trail. Hikers can still see wagon wheel ruts left by settlers traveling to California, as the park was once a stop along the historic California Trail.
This seemed to be a good spot for campers. They have tent and rv sites. Didn't really feel like a state park. I was a little disappointed that I didn't see any scenic views. This was a decent place for us to let the dog out for a few minutes.
There at the end of August, pretty hot but it was summer. Almost empty, quiet and very pretty. Great place to stay the night, nice showers.
Was able to get atop in the evening for some nice sunset colors on the rocks.
It's not a big park, but very pretty. There's only one fairly short nature trail, which was closed for flood damage when I was there (June 2014), but I still enjoyed my brief visit.
I would suggest going when there is life in the park - Spring or Summer. Even Fall would be good. The end of Winter (April 1st), however, wasn't great. If you've never been to Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, CO then this is probably a good place to go, otherwise it's just okay.
This place was so fake I was trippin nigga but it was amazing how I used imagination to fix it
We found this a great place to crash for a night on our cross country road trip. We got there late but selfpaid found a great cement pad to put up our pop up and everything was easy and clean. Just crash one night and left the next morning.
making a reservation here sucks
BUT the park is beautiful, nearby Hinton is a quaint small town to walk around or get necessities at the local grocer. we stayed in the Canyon Campground and thought it yo be the best. you pay for showers ( seriously?) we would stay here again. important note: The driveway in is extremely steep and winding.....
As a geologist, nice turn out from the interstate to take a view of nature. Nice spire and iron stained sandstone.
This is a very nice state park. The sites are large and clean, with plenty of trees. The red canyon is pretty, and it was an unexpected, pleasant stop on our roadtrip to Arizona.
Great stop for us to camp for cheap on our cross country road trip. We had the canyon completely to ourselves, which our dog loved, and he was kept out of trouble because the canyon encloses the site completely. Great waypoint.
