“One of the best natural history museums”
The Sternberg Museum of Natural History ranks among the best natural history museums. No other state university the size of Fort Hays State University has a natural history museum comparable in size and scientific importance to this museum's holdings.
Interesting museum but don't be fooled by the picture on road trippers (because that is not the Sternberg.) You won't see any large terrestrial dinosaur fossils but they do have some incredible and fairly large aquatic dinosaur and terrestrial mammal fossils. We were a bit let down because we thought we'd see T. rex and we thought the museum would be bigger.
About a 1.5 hour stop if you're not going to read all the signs. They had quite a large collection of fossils, including some large aquatic animals. There were also live animals, including each species of rattlesnake native to the US.
Awesome stop. We never would have thought it would be so much fun but it really was. We pulled off the highway to stretch our legs. We spent over an hour up and walking around which was must needed. Awesome photo op and was only $8 to get in
Great displays for all ages, the upstairs display (thru the cave) was a favorite. ASTC membership reciprocal entry.
Such a neat place! My family and I learned so much and loved seeing the animals. Good value and highly recommend!
Went there when my son was 7. He’s almost 30 now and we still talk about how cool it was.
Great museum. Clean and well kept. Tells history of western Kansas when it was covered with a shallow sea and the fossils that have been found there. Wonderful discovery room for the kids. Many living amphibions and reptiles on display also. The grandkids loved it.
Great little museum! We went with kids aged 5 months through 6 years and it was easy to navigate and kept them engaged. There were tons of fossils and live animals to look at. We didn’t stop to read many of the signs, but did look at everything and it took about 1.5 hours. The dinosaur exhibit on the top floor and the live snakes were a hit with the kids. It was also stroller friendly and had lots of benches and seating throughout the museum. Free admission if you have an ASTC museum membership.
My kids loved this! Great place to stop enroute to CO. The dinosaurs on the third level move if you wait long enough (the t-Rex is watching you!). Good times!
It’s a great museum with wonderful exhibits! The fish within a fish is a real phenomenon. The animatronic Dino’s are cool. And the taxidermy is plentiful!
