“the largest single tract of land within the NJ State Park System”
Wharton State Forest is the largest single tract of land within the New Jersey State Park System. It is also the site of Batsto Village, a former bog iron and glass making industrial center from 1766 to 1867 that currently reflects the agricultural and commercial enterprises that existed here during the late 19th century. Throughout Wharton are rivers and streams for canoeing, hiking trails (including a major section of the Batona Trail), miles of unpaved roads for mountain biking and horseback riding and numerous lakes, ponds and fields ideal for wildlife observation. Bald eagles, red-tailed hawks, marsh hawks, ospreys, great blue herons, swans, screech owls, great-horned owls, bluebirds, hummingbirds, purple martins, goldfinch, turkeys, beavers, river otters, fox and deer are only some of the wildlife the alert visitor can see.
Yesterday I lead a hike with the Outdoors Club of South Jersey. We began at Atsion on the Mullica ( yellow) trail. The yellow trail needs alot of work. T he blazes are spread too far apart. and you never feel comfortable leading a hike on this trail .Several times we out off the trail and had to back track to see where the trail was located. There are too many intersections where there are no turn indicated and you go off on an unmarked trail.Since there are many unmarked trails with not turn signals it is very easy to get lost. I t is very sad that with only 1 trail at Atsion to blazed why should hikers have such a difficult time staying on the trail route.I think with little trail maintenance this would be a great place to hike.I never have a problem on the green, purple or the pink trails only the Mullica(yellow).
