Rogers Rock Campground

Didn't get a chance to stay here. Place looks like it would be great. But the staff were rude in person and on the phone. Very unwelcoming.

We stayed at site #182 which is essentially completely shaded and on the edge of a hill. It was an absolute nightmare trying to get our RV backed into the site. We have been to 20+ campgrounds in the last 2 months and this was by far the hardest one to maneuver around.

When we checked in, the *kid* who checked us in could not answer any of my questions and pretty much had no idea what was going on. We then made the mistake of turning right which was an utter nightmare because there was literally no where to turn around. There were so many cars parked on both sides of the road that people had to actually move their cars so we could fit. We then got stuck in the mud going back up a hill. To date, that was the worst experience we have ever had towing. We finally got to our site and it took another 30 minutes to get it in. Absolutely awful. There was trash all over the campsite when we arrived. That night the campsite next to us partied until 3 am.

The next night we heard people screaming, a drunk guy ran into a moving vehicle and many F bombs were heard. I should add, we have small children who could hear all of this.

My sister and her family were staying at a site in another part of the campground and had the same issues with partier and drunk people. They left to stay at a hotel and complained.

The following night, 4th of July, it was shockingly quiet. It remained pretty quiet until we checked out.

The other issue I have is that the showers are disgusting. Hair, trash and dirt was all over the showers. We refused to let our kids bath there and took them to a hotel where we had extended family. It's the kind of place you are just praying your toe doesn't touch the absolutely disgusting floor as your get dressed and briefly take your foot out of your shower shoe..I mean gross.

We never used any of the other facilities because we attended a family camp down the street. The last part of our stay, a family pulled in next to us. They told us their kids couldn't even swim at the lake due to dead fish floating all around. We didn't have that problem at the family camp a few miles down the road!

We were also informed by a long-term summer resident that they and many others dump their sewage in the woods at the campground. I can't even begin to talk about how unsanitary that is with little concern for how that may impact the water supply, the lake people swim in, or God forbid sewage washes into tent campers!!

Some campsites were larger, with sunlight and easy access to pull in. It's a shame this campground has so many negatives, it's conveniently located next to a family camp we love but we won't be coming back. We will be checking out the Brookwood RV campground about a mile up the road, it looks like it offers full hookups as well which at leasts eliminates people dumping their sewage in the woods!

It was a beautiful Columbus Day Weekend on Lake George. We camped at the Rogers Rock DEC State Campground and hiked Roger's Rock. The leaves were in full color and the weather was great! We kayaked up to Ticonderoga (Mohawk for "it is at the junction of two waterways"). We walked along the LaChute falls on the Riverwalk trail. There's a cute little museum ( Ticonderoga Heritage Museum) near Bicentennial Park. The campground gets its name from an English Colonial fighter during the French and Indian War named Robert Rogers. Legend says that Major Rogers fled from his Indian pursuers from the top and slid down the near vertical rock face to Lake George. The campground has mostly small sites with no services, but it is a lovely area and great for tents and small trailers.

Do not book any sites up on the hill (179-244) if you have an RV or trailer. Almost everyone gets hung up on a rock at a tight curve, the road is narrow and the sites are hard to back into. I can't say anything about the rest of the campground, except your best choice is probably down below, in the sites above the parking area with views of the lake. Off-season may have been the reason for no issues with dirty sites or bathrooms, but the showers were pretty lousy. Push a button to make it run for 30 seconds.The first I tried has so little water flow that I could not wash my hair. The second was better until I tried to rinse my hair and the water went stone cold. When inquiring about hikes in the park, I was told there was one walk to an overlook and that it was nice. No maps or trail markings. My understanding was that it was just a "stroll", so I didn't take water or wear my hiking boots. Well, that didn't work out so well, because it was a tough hands and knees, grabbing-at-roots-and-trees-to-pull-me-up climb that went on and on. At one point, my phone kicked on and I could look it up - finding that it was 3.5 miles RT. So disappointed because it was cool and challenging but I was unprepared, and turned around.

This is an incredible site that’s lowkey, friendly, and has one of the most incredible views I’ve ever seen.
