“Check out the Scraggly Hills!”

Ricker Pond State Park, established in the 1930’s, is located on the western shores of Ricker Pond and adjacent to the Montpelier-Wells Rail Trail (Cross Vermont Trail). As early as 1704, Native Americans and the French were using routes through Groton to reach Canada and Massachusetts. Colonists settled this area of Vermont slightly earlier than the rest of the state through the accessible network of waterways. The rocky, tree covered hillsides were originally cloaked with white pine, spruce, hemlock, beech, maple and birch. These were logged by local farmers for lumber, fuel and potash. The logging industry was large-scale for almost 100 years while the railroad was operating. Today, logging is still a vital industry in the area, but has lost some of its dominance in favor of modern society’s leisure time movement - private cottages/seasonal homes and a variety of outdoor recreation activities. Groton State Forest, with over 26,000 acres, is the second largest landholding administered by the Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation. It contains over 17 miles of hiking trails and over 20 miles of gravel roads and multi-use trails suitable for mountain biking and horseback riding. The campground has 27 tent/trailer sites, 23 lean-tos, 5 cabins and a waterfront rental cottage that comfortably sleeps up to 5 and comes with a canoe. Two of the three rest rooms include hot showers ($). A sanitary dump station is available, but no hookups. There is a swimming beach, boat launch, shelter, and access to miles of hiking trails.

There is a beach for swimming, canoe and kayak rentals. Bike trail and hiking trails. Much larger than new discovery campground. No hookups for power or water. But the have cabins. About 4 miles from a small restaurant/country store/gas station, burgers are good but the carrot cake is very good.

While Ricker Pond is very scenic with the pond, I would not recommend this as a place to stay for those even with a small RV (we have a 16” foot long travel trailer). While we had no issues getting into our site, the amenities were just not there as advertised. Yes, they have water spigots, but nothing you can attach to a hose, even with a water bandit. Yes, they have a dump station, but you have to drive past your site to get to it. And there is no easy place to turn around. We probably could have done it with our camper, but anyone else with a longer camper would have real issues. Needless to say, we decided to forego both a water fill and a dump.

The site itself was nice and level, and private. There was some road noise as the RV Campsites are situated between the camp road and the highway. It was not too noticeable at night though..

The restrooms were not great. The cleanliness was just OK, but they are old. There was no hot water at the sinks and no cold water to mix with the hot in the shower.

This is definitely a park for people that like lean tos. If you have a camper, it might not be your best choice.

This park is really scenic with great staff and Camp Hosts! I used to be a lean-to camper, but my most recent stay was in my minivan. That was in 2021 and I used an RV site. There are no hookups, but there are water spigots in every camp loop. There is a bathroom for each loop. The showers take quarters to get hot water and the temp can be adjusted as needed.

This is a really pretty park, but if you want full hookups and large sites for turning a big rig around in, you may want a private campground.

Ricker Pond SP is like essentially all Vermont parks -- aimed more at tent and lean-to campers than RV's. There are no hook-ups nor is there any internet -- wifi or 4G. (The Groton Free library has a password protected Wifi that is on all the time)

There are only about five sites where we can fit our twenty-five foot Airstream in.

It's a pretty little body of water and it is easy to see why so many folks, many who have camped all over Vermont, come back. If you have a larger RV, there are several sites up at the next campground, Stillwater, which can handle large units. You'll need a generator or solar system -- it's boondocking at about $20 a day.

There's a $1 a day pet fee at all state parks and a $7 reservation fee.

Showers take quarters -- $75 for 6 minutes is more than enough. The restrooms in generally have a Boy Scout camp feel to them although they are kept clean and are quite adequate.
